Skype Video Calling on your phone

I have Droid Incredible and thinking about using Skype Video Calling to communicate with my daughter in Chicago, who will in China for a few weeks and also using it to communicate with business partners in China, UK, Germany and India.

I use Instant Messenger now at work and home for business but I need something when I’m on the go and traveling …..

Any of the OC use Skype Video calling communication on their phone? Any problems?
They say it free but is it if you’re communicating overseas.

Never quite understood how the video communication on the phone works since the camera is on the opposite side of the viewing screen. What do you do, say something into the camera then flip it over so you can see the other person responding?

You do realize most of the newer phones have two cameras right?

Neither would the phone in the OP.

Skype has not fully rolled out to Android phones yet. Skype is still working on the app to get it right. Currently, only the iPhone supports video calling. The Skype app for Android lets you message your contacts, and make the VOIP calls. But you can't actually video chat with that app yet.

It only works on WiFi for my iPhone 4. I have done it a few times, but since it only works on WiFi, i'd rather do it on the computer at my house. If they find a way to make it work through the providers network, then it would be much better, because you could skype anywhere.

So, my advice is just to download skype on your computer and get a webcam if you don't have one or if it isn't already built in your computer.

Are you talking specifically about Droid or iPhone? According to the Skype site, you're able to face to face over 3G...
With other Skype users you can:

Make free Skype-to-Skype voice and video calls over 3G and WiFi.*
Share video calls on Skype with people on iPhone**, PC, Mac or a Skype-enabled TV.
Talk face-to-face or show what you're seeing with front- and rear-facing cameras.

I was talking about the iPhone. Everyone told me you have to be on WiFi to use "facetime," so i figured the same applied to skype. If this is not the case, that is good to know!

Yes, "facetime", using strictly the Apple "app" can only be done over Wi-Fi, but with Skype, you can facetime over 3G. I've still yet to try it, but I heard the quality is still hit or miss. I'm sure the quality of the signal has a lot to do with it!

I've not used skype mobile, but I use skype to talk overseas frequently. I think the image quality can be pretty bad at times. I don't know if I would try it for business. My wife has it on her phone and she uses it to chat and talk fairly often. (no video)

As long as the other side has skype it's free.

Not with the Skype app. You could use Qik. But Skype is not rolled out yet.
