This kind of stuff really is disgusting, and these people (hard to call them "officers") don't deserve to be let free in public, even as private citizens.

Actually, I agree with everything I've posted here.

My uncle is an officer with the LAPD and has been for his entire professional career (has gone back and forth between Vice and the GND - previously the Eagle Unit), and I have a lot of respect for police officers as a rule, because they do voluntarily take on more risk in order to keep us safe (even little podunk cops).

However, I do agree that when cops do things like this, it brings disgrace to their profession, and it is worse than even a private citizen doing the same thing, because they are given a certain amount of authority, and they are abusing it.

He might have said, "Suck my dick," to the officers or something like that, but that doesn't warrant getting tackled and beat to shit. Nothing he did warranted the actions by the officer. If he'd said something threatening, it wouldn't have warranted the actions after the restraint (and possibly not even before the restraint) if not coupled with actions consistent with posing an actual threat.

There is no way to justify tackling (and beating to shit) a man who exhibits no physical behavior indicating danger or violence.

Nope. My position stands. If a drunk POS yells anything at me, but makes no gesture of violence, I don't have the right to tackle him (which he doesn't even attempt to resist in the video), and I ESPECIALLY don't have the right to pin him down and beat the holy shit out of him.

It's foolish to run your mouth, but that doesn't give any officer the right to tackle you and beat the shit out of you. There is ZERO justification for the officer pinning him and punching him repeatedly (while he laid defenseless on the ground) instead of just cuffing him (which, based on the video, the cop would have been able to do without even tackling him, as the man didn't resist the cop once).

I must be missing something here, I watched the video and all I seen was a guy being taught to look both ways before crossing at a intersection. The 2 officers should be thanked for saving that mans life, who knows what would have happened if he would have been permitted to cross the street in that traffic without looking both ways.

Gotta agree with O-Trap on this one and I am almost always on the side of the police on these things. Not just cuz I have a half dozen relatives in law enforcement, but because people who get a police beat down usually deserve it by not complying in some manner.

Yeah, the guy didn't move and could easily have been handcuffed. If he'd struggled, THEN it would have been acceptable to Ray Lewis his ass, but the facial reconstruction would still have been over the line. He could have been a serial killer and that still wouldn't have been justification for a law enforcement officer to tenderize his face like that. A simple tackle and handcuff would have sufficed at the very most.

On a serious note, do you think this kind of police brutality goes on more than we know? The only time we hear about it and the police are made to pay for using unnecessary force is when it is caught on video and even then it is still disputed. You would think that officers would be a little more careful with the use of excessive force when it is unprovoked, considering the increased presence of cell phone and security cameras everywhere you turn.

I do think it happens more often than noted, and I also believe that there are instances of it being reported when it didn't occur. It's a giant cluster, making it hard to judge.

Most times when a minority or street person is abused that they just write it off as being a false report or claim he resisted arrest or threatened to kill them , because they figure nobody really cares and that just gives some officers more freedom to patrol with a iron fist. Yes, there are a lot of instances of false reports by people that are pissed because they were busted for a crime that they are guilty of and just want to get even with the officer who arrested them, they should be prosecuted to the fullest. I do believe that if the abuse in the video would have happened in a dark alley with no witnesses, this would have been written off as a false report of abuse because officers had to struggle with the man because he was all hyped up on drugs or something and it is ashame that their is no correct answer on how to fix the problem with false reports. Not meaning to bring race in to the equation but I have noticed that the NAACP is always trying to file abuse and harassment charges whenever a black man is arrested regardless of the crime that was committed.

The police action could have been affected by prior run-ins and/or behavior.

Why would the officer ask him to zip up his jacket in the first place? I'd have said "go fuck yourself" to that too. Cops can't tell you something like that.

And even if he did say "go fuck yourself" or whatever. That isn't a reason for an arrest let alone a beating. Especially considering he was about as complient as possible even when the dude was beating him with the stick for no reason. Not every person would have been able to just sit and let that happen.

I think in cases like this that the officers should never be allowed to work in law enforcement again. You have to punish these types of people extremely severely so that everyone knows that it is absolutely unacceptable to dishonor the badge and abuse the authority given to it.
