Honestly, he seems really inexperienced, but I'll give him a shot. This is still Ohio State, and we're still going to be champions, whether the haters like it or not.

This upcoming season will be interesting...thats for sure. I'm curious to see what offensive approach they go for. I hope they run the ball....A LOT.

Just watched it on CFB Live. Smith said there was paperwork for a 2 year deal and said he'll make $775,000 a year. Is that right? Or is he going in to year 2 of his deal and his pay has just been increased?

I watched it live via streaming on the OSU website, and I thought he handled it extremely well...and I loved his answer when asked if he had any talks with Pryor leading up to the day he left (just watch it, 'cause his tone of voice and facial expression are great)...there's no doubt in my mind that Fickell didn't like Pryor--AT ALL!!!!

I would guess (didn't see the presser) that anything about the on-going investigation would be off limits, including questions about those who are facing suspension.
From what I've heard that came out of the press conference, it sounds like there won't be any changes to the staff so far as who will be doing the play calling. It will be Bollman, even though many on here thought they'd bring in someone else or change duties among the current staff.

He gave a lot of cliches and was a little light on substance. That's okay though Tress did that as well. He does seem a little wet behind the ears but he is the best option on the team. Heacock and Bollman aren't head coaching types

Fickell is definitely not polished with the media yet. Overall he handled himself well, but I agree with jordo- there were lots of cliches, and he seemed a little nervous, like he was reading from a script. Anyway, I wish him well and he'll definitely get a chance to prove himself this year.

Yup could tell he was nervous but really noticed it towards the end. Said alot of thins that didnt make sense and had some awkward pauses.
Not his fault though. He is in over his head right now. Definitely could have used some time at a smaller school first. Tress decided to use the buddy system for his top assistants and thus we are left to turn to a young guy with no experience. It could be worse though. We could have promoted Nick Siciliano haha

Fickell won't be around for just two years. Either it's a one-and-done, or he signs a long term deal after this season. The administration has said the coaching search will take place after this season.

Fickell's deal is two years, because that's what he had remaining on his current contract. He has a slim chance to keep the job in the second year. I like Fickell but he looked awful in his presser. The head coach at OSU has to be able to sell himself to the media and more importantly to boosters. Not sure if Fickell has that yet.

This is correct. Not sure he looked awful, but he certainly wasn't comfortable in front of camera's and press. But not sure I expected anything different. He sounded what he is, young. He came off much like a high school coach IMO. I like Fickell and think he is a VERY good asst. coach. But he isn't ready for this kind of job IMO. Too inexperienced. Coaching a program like OSU on a Saturday is the easy part. Dealing with everything else around a program of this magnitude is the most difficult part. And thats the area where he doesn't have the experience. I wish him nothing but success, but just don't view him as the long term replacement.

This. If we win a Big 10 championship and he rallies the troops, he'll get the job. If we stumble to 7 or 8 wins, I think they will probably look elsewhereFickell won't be around for just two years. I think this may be true. However he will have to grow tremendously in the intangible department of being a HC, which is the things we said above: media, boosters, compliance, time management, recruiting, etc.

I think this is something that will come with time. The guy hasnt exactly been groomed to be a HC. He very well could have remained a coordinator for the rest of his time at OSU if it wasnt for this situation. He is in a tough spot and hes going to have to answer alot of tough questions, I thought he handled himself pretty well
