In HS we paid for a pizza delivery in pennies. Think it was like 12 bucks or so> We left note on porch to take the pennies and leave the pizza.
We called the place later and asked if we had all the righ money.
They said we were 20 cents short and came up and got the 20 pennies later that night!

At least roll the pennies if you're going to pay with a shitload of them, lol.
Honestly, most places would probably happily (or at least begrudgingly not refuse you) take a shitload of rolled ones, they just take them into the safe and cash them out for bills.

Reminds me of that kid who paid a to get his car out of the impound in pennies. The tow company wouldn't take the pennies (at first), but the police came and told them they had to take the money.

A man from the Steubenville area cashed in $80,000 in pennies a couple of years ago and they were not rolled. A couple of banks refused to accept his deposit.

Are they actually legally required to accept the pennies?

I would think they can refuse a sale for any reason just like anyone else, but since they are contracted with the PD in this instance it may be a little different.

It's legal tender, they have to accept it as payment (if it's cash). They could always say "we don't take cash."
I can't imagine any law stating that an institution that accepts cash for payment can refuse a form of United States' currency. Sure it sucks that you have to count it out, but oh well.

"Legal tender for all debts public and private"
Of course if places don't accept cash that's different or if they can't accept it because they don't have the correct change to give you but if you pay in the correct amount I don't see a reason they could really refuse.
Although it's a dick move to pay for anything big with pennies.

They can. At the other end of the spectrum, ever seen a sign indicating that a business doesn't accept anything larger than a $20? Perfectly legal.

This is BS, the clinic said they accept cash payments, then refused to take the payment.

I wonder how long before banks start charging a percentage fee, like coinstar, for the change they run through the machine.
I used to do this to save up for the down payment of my next car. I did it for the last two cars I bought. I forget how much I had for the first one in 1998, but in 2007 I had just over $2,200 in change. Wasnt too bad of an idea. I would just usuallly blow the change on a pop or candy machine or whatnot. Hell, I even started to put dollar bills in there...if I had a loose dolalr or two I would put it in there (I used one of theo large plastic coke bottles from spencers and taped it up so I couldnt see it inside or easily take from it) and I had around 500 dollar bills!
