When I worked for a large organization, if I had vouched for one of my employees who screwed up, then it was found that the issue was far, far larger than first known, both my employee and I would be on the street. Should this be the case in this tOSU mess? Smith is on record as standing with JT as his coach, should he not fall with him as well?

610 was talking about this going all the way to Gee. Not sure it woould hit Gordon, but Smith is on the hot seat for sure.

One has to wonder if Tressel knew this info, did the assistants?

Is there any evidence of that, or are you just carpet-bombing?

How many assistants does OSU have? And none knew anything.

Smith has to go for a couple reasons. One, because he is the AD and this happened under his watch, similar to your example. Two, his 11 day "investigation" was a joke and is likely to cost OSU dearly. Possibly with OSU getting slapped with the infamous LOIC.

Without evidence, it's a stupid question.

If there was evidence, it wouldn't be a question, no? Who's asking the stupid question?

So there needs to be proof to ask a question?

Are we talking about people ABOVE Tressel or BELOW Tressel? Gee and Smith are above him. People like Luke Fickell are/were below him. Which people are we talking about?

Oh ok, thanks for clearing that up. I'm sure the assistants didn't know a thing anyway.

Gene Smith is a pretty big deal for the NCAA, but I have to think if Tressel was responsible for knowing everything was going on, then so is Smith. Who does the compliance department answer to? I can't imagine it's Tressel.

I do think Gee is pretty safe.

I hope not, or that means there is lack of institutional control. The only reason Tressel resigned is because the board was sick of the witch hunt the media is/was on and knew it wouldn't end until Tressel left. Smith will come out of this clean.

They're probably all going to lose their jobs when OSU hires a new coach anyway.

That is the worst reason I can think of for Tressel resigning.

I have no doubt, but he is just as responsible IMHO.

First of all, there's no evidence that Tressel knew about any of this prior to receiving the first email in April 2010. If you read the emails it appears that he had no idea about any of this before that. The SI article also only alleges that about 2% of the players over the past 8 years did this stuff, but doesn't really allege or provide any evidence that Tressel was aware of it.

There's also no evidence that Smith or Gee knew about that tattoos before last September, or that they knew about Tressel before March of this year.

Gee is absolutely safe and it's highly unlikely anything happens to Smith.

Agreed. The only thing we know for sure is that someone tipped Tressel off about a couple of players. (I think the email only named 2, but I'm not 100% positive.)

If they fired Tress for not knowing, how can the people above him be safe? They are just as guilty IMHO. (OK, maybe not as guilty because they didn't get an email.)

Gee: only if he steps down due to public backlash because he's the president of the university. In other words, I don't think he'll be forced out, but he might choose to go if things get shitty enough.

Smith: more of a possibility. If just because (from articles I've read), after the initial stuff came out, he announced they did a mere 11-day (app) investigation that determined that was an isolated incident and he was satisfied nothing else was amiss. Depending on how bad things potentially wind up as far as the NCAA goes (a big unknown), things could wind up getting bad for him.

Gee shouldn't go. His job as President of the University entails a lot more than just the football team. He's done way too many good things for OSU as a school and is world's better than his predecessor Holbrook.

Gene Smith should only go if OSU gets charged with LOIC...and that depends on this investigation into the new claims. A testimony from a convict alone isn't enough to cost Smith his job, especially given his position in college sports. Let's just say it won't look good if one of the few African-American AD's in the country gets fired....yea I said it.
