I walked across the Brooklyn Bridge this morning to work, and the Freedom Tower is really starting to take shape. I should have taken a photo, but I didn't, and the best I could find online is this shot (which is dated, I would say they have completed at least 40 stories):

This building has had a lot of supporters, and a lot of opposers. Curious what non-New Yorkers think, here is what the Freedom Tower will look like, vs. the WTC:

I was in NYC in 2008 and 2009. In 08 there was no elevation, 09 maybe 20 feet? Good progress, would like to see some pics.

Why would someone be opposed to this?

I think a lot of people say "why build another target?"

For those that don't know, the new building will have 110 floors, the same amount each of the World Trace Center buildings had. Also, on top of the new building will be a tall coil which will make the building 1,776 feet tall, signifying our independence.

Most of those in opposition feel that (A) the site should remain untouched as a memorial to those who died (note: the footprints of the WTC will be turned into water fountains and that entire block will be a memorial, even with the new building) and (B) if you were to build another structure there, it should resemble the World Trade Center. Many don't like the look of the new Tower, but then again, most New Yorkers considered the WTC an eyesore when it was built.

It will have the same number of floors - 110.

When asked why the new building was being erected, I think Hilary Clinton said something along these lines (not word-for-word): "Americans do not back down and never surrender. If we don't act on this, they have won."

I can sympathize with (A), but I hardly think what is being done is diminishing the memorial of it.

This is news to me: apparently the building has been named from "Freedom Tower" to simply "One World Trade Center" http://skyscraperpage.com/cities/?buildingID=7788

You must not have looked closely at the photo you posted, because it clearly says "One World Trade Center Plaza" lol. I like Freedom Tower better though.

Haha, so true. I remember, prior to 9/11, talking to relatives who lived in New York, and they thought the towers were tremendous eyesores, and joked that they wanted somebody to blow them up. :( Without the people in them, of course, but still, they felt bad about it after 9/11.

I think that many of these buildings are phallic in nature.....

I think this one is a gigantic middle finger of defiance.

I'm just glad they didn't let Frank Gehry anywhere near the designing process.

Although his new building in New York is pretty neat.
