I guess free tuition, free room, free food, and book stipend weren't enough. Give me that stuff, and I'll happily play football for your school as well as many others.

Saw this earlier. What I find most interesting is the angle they are already taking on not expecting the mid-major type conferences to be able to keep up. Basically, it is, "screw them, they aren't as important".
"How do we get back more toward the collegiate model and a regulatory system that is based more on student-athlete welfare than it is on a level playing field, where everything is about a cost issue and whether or not everybody can afford to do everything everybody else can do?" Delany asked.
But some Big Ten officials say if they can help out their athletes, then the concept of using the same rules for all teams should be abandoned. Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said the stakes are simply higher for schools like his than for those in the MAC or Sun Belt.

100% correct, Delany is an idiot. After the "Legends and Leaders" disgrace I didn't think the Big 10 could sink any lower, but this clown has made it so. Schollie athletes have everything paid for now, and even get a per diem on top of it. A well-budgeted athlete can make money from their schollie.
To the extent that collegiate athletes should be paid from proceeds, it should be in the form of a trust fund for them when they graduate. Anyone that's lived in a major college environment knows that the athltes are already treated like Greek gods, giving them more money isn't a good idea.

Horrible idea. This system would get abused so bad it's sad. Still it's gotta suck for those athletes who won't be turning pro that can't get a job for a 4 year period. Idk what i'd do without a steady paycheck

Awful idea. They get free everything already...as well as a stipend. And what living expenses do they have? They get to live in dorms for free (it is their personal choice to move off campus, so they should have to pay for that), free meals in the mess halls (their choice to order pizza or eat somewhere else)...many campuses let the students use their meal cards at fast food places that are on campus now as well. The only thing they dont already get for free is laundry.

I thought that was interesting as well. IMO, if the mid-majors can't do it, the OSUs shouldn't be allowed to either.

Anyone else notice we never see Jim Delany and Sleeper together at the same place and time?
Seriously, I know a lot of what Sleeper says is tongue and cheek, but I do know people who think and speak like he does in regards to OSU and other programs. Sounds like Jimbo is right there with him.

i like it. most athletes spend too much time preparing for exams and practicing their sport to have time to work. working would do the same things this rule is proposing, give the kids money to cover living expenses.
and for most cases, the student athletes can get internships to save up for the school year because of summer workouts and what not.
its a good idea to me. but i understand how easy it would then become for shady characters to grease the wheel even more to lure kids in.

they don't have living expenses that need covered. room, books, food, board, and stipend. what am I missing?

also, this is a fucking voluntary thing these guys are doing...its not like someone is forcing them to accept a schollie. For the majority of guys who won't go pro, they already have an advantage over us mere mortals...they have no student loan debt. Give me a fucking break.

And if it hasn't changed since I was in college, most of the football team got very good jobs over the summer. Of course that could be a problem (cough, Rhett Bomar) if it was a sham job.

Even if they did this, kids will still do stupid things and they'll want more. It's opening up a can that nobody knows what to do with. Very bad idea.

Sure, fine, whatever. You have to pay the swim team? Gymnastics? All the sports who don't make the athletic department any money? Good luck convincing the Northwestern's of the world, with an athletic budget that is dwarfed by Ohio State, that this is a good idea.

My daughter received an ROTC scholarship 15 years ago that included $300/month "laundry" money. I wouldn't be surprised if it's $500/month by now. If ROTC why not athletes?
