Ethical Dilemma....advice needed

Three housemates Michael, Scottie, Phil, rental agreement on house is expiring in a month, and negotiation for lease renewal has begun. Scottie decides to shack up with his girlfriend of 6 months Toni (who is a waste of life). She has a roommate Horace, and since the relationship between Michael Phil and Horace is good, decide to swap.

The catch, Toni and Horace have to vacate lease. Michael Scotty Phil make loose agreement to help them defer that cost.

Come back today, Toni and Scottie tell housemates the fee to vacate is 2000 and that money is due Friday.

Ethical dilemma, Michael Phil feel no obligation to help the Toni and Scottie who moved out, would be happy to help them, but not to the tune of 400 a person.

Is Michael Phil wrong to tell Scottie to take what we give him, since he decided to move in with Toni and get her to break her lease, split it with the Horace and pay the rest yourself.

I admit it is a terrible thing, but when it comes to my finances I could care less about friendships. Its not personal, but my money and my financial security are more important and I will do what I can to self preserve.

But you're spot on. I gave up on thinking I could offer any insight, since I cannot even understand the problem. :D

You could have stopped at the gay swapping reference and just told them all to get the fuck out. I would have told you to just bang Toni but she is dating a fag and now she may have AIDS. The best thing to do is don't get overly drunk and pass out, the gay swingers you have for roommates might try and settle the rent with your ass, so just stay sober until you can get your own place and whatever you do, don't bend over in the shower for any reason if they are home.

Wait is this the Horace Grant or Dennis Rodman era? Cuz this sounds an awful lot like something Rodman would have not only been a part of but been deeply involved.

Lolz. My mistake was hiring friends then letting them stay till they got settled. Some won't leave, others leave and make my life hell in the process. Sounds like I have to Jerry reinsdorf and blow the whole thing up. Itll look like an ego trip and I'll be hated for ruining the franchise but we will be better off in the long run.

No gays. Match.com turned my roommates from zeros to heroes. Now their immediate player status has them shacking up with female flings.

The answer is obvious: wait for Michael to temporarily move out, then move in with Hakeem for 2 years. Full of win.

I didn't think I was THAT drunk. Thank goodness I'm not losing my touch.

You're a pretty cool guy with poor grammar. *applause*

I assume they're doing well since they made the smart choice by rooming together and not mixing races or ethnicity's. Obviously, black, white, and Croatian do not mix.

As for the problem at hand, I don't see the problem with paying $400 per person when they are professional athletes. They are already saving money by having roommates. Now, if it were me, just a regular joe, I would NOT pay $400 for someone else's lease. If my name isn't on it, I'm not touching it.

I also gave up. It was reading like a trick question to me.

Why did Toni/Horace have to break their lease and not just assign it or switch out for the new person?

What was the "loose agreement"? What was the expectation at the time?

Expectation was that the other parties help them out when it came time to pay remainder of lease.

Toni Horace had to break existing lease because they moved out of house in another town, to get to Chicago

If there was an agreement that resulted in a reasonable expectation that the other parties would help out when it came time to pay the remainder of the lease, I think the other parties should chip in and help out, as long as that was understood by everyone. But a lot depends on the expectations--if people thought they'd be chipping in $50, then they shouldn't have to chip in $400. But they shouldn't get off with nothing, either.

is Michael Phil 1 person?

that's what i'm having trouble deciphering, at some point it's as if the 3 friends became 1 person. either way, if i followed correctly, toni broke the lease of her own free will to shack up with her man. michael and phil agreed to help, not pay all of it. i'd also like to think that since toni and scottie are staying in the place they could work something out (i.e. sign a new lease) to change the name from bill cartwright (or whoever it was) to scottie's.

Here's the rub,

Since Scottie left to live with Toni, and asked Phil, Michael, and Horace to help they have all agreed to help.
Michael, Phil, and Horace will each pay a couple hundred to help them get out of the lease. Scottie was super pissed to learn that MJ, Phil, and Horace wouldn't pony up 400 bucks a person to help with this cost. So Scottie got mad, typed a Dan Gilbert like letter, and has vowed never again to speak to MJ, Phil, and Horace again (at least not until he gets his ring. Which in this case, Toni will actually be getting a ring, and Scottie will need best men for the wedding)

If you never were able to follow this, sorry.

It's hard to follow this, but I think Michael, Phil, and Horace are correct to pay the amount they reasonably understood to be agreeing to pay.
