Scott Rolen's Reds?

The Reds are 4-0 since Rolen returned from the DL. Coincidence? Maybe not.

Take a look at the Reds record dating back to 2009 with and without Rolen appearing in the game.

2009
With: 27-13 (.675)
Without: 51-71 (.418)

2010
With: 78-55 (.586)
Without: 13-16 (.448)

2011
With: 13-8 (.619)
Without: 11-9 (.550)

Total
With: 118-76 (.608)
Without: 75-96 (.439)

That's 42 games above .500 with him, and 21 games below .500 without him. Not a lot of data yet for 2011, but the 2010 and 2009 records pretty clearly make the case.

So what say you? Is this correlation without causation, or is Rolen really this important to the Reds?

The Reds' offense is arguably the best offense in baseball when Rolen is hitting. It's no coincidence.

A lot of that has to do with the fact that the Reds don't have an suitable replacement defensively, or more importantly, in the lineup. His impact on both is major, but when he's out, it usually means the lineup has at least 2 or 3 other shifts in batting slots. Consistency = Production.

Huh? You mean adding Rolen's .270, .285 and this years .273 puts them over the top to the best in baseball? Or did you mean his whopping 25 HR's in 190 some odd games?

I meant what I said...when Rolen is hitting (the reason his average is low, is because he goes on very bad cold spells) the Reds have arguably the best offense in baseball. Any team that has the MVP on their team has a legit claim to that.

By the way, since when is .270, .285, and .273 a bad average?

365 games since hes been on the roster. That's a decent sample size. 42 over with him and 21 under without him is a pretty compelling stat. Whether you can measure his impact by his batting average or home run total is up for debate, but those numbers don't lie...

You think Rolen coming back into the lineup, and the Reds having 10+ hits in every game since is just a coincidence?? Also those are pretty good averages in MLB.

Thats impressive.

I think the most important thing that Rolen brings (aside from maybe the professionalism) is consistency. When he plays, everyone else knows their spot in the order, and their position on the field. Guys can get comfortable, and with comfort brings confidence, which in turn brings success. I honestly think his most important role to the team is allowing everyone else to stay in their role and not have to be shuffled around and guess where they will be playing in both the order and defensively when they get to the ballpark.

Leadership, professionalism and he is the glue that bridges the lineup together.


He is like a important ingredient in a recipe that if you try to replace or substitute it really changes the whole dish. Some ingrediants you can substitute in and, but others are vital to the final product even if by itself it isnt truly amazing.
