The past few days, I've been spotting a groundhog in my back yard.

Today, my wife calls me while I'm at work to tell me she saw three of them (two smaller ones and an full grown one) gnawing on some branches we cut down yesterday.

My first thought was to get some traps and a pellet gun and take them out, but my wife really doesn't like that idea.

Any advice on how to get rid of them more humanely?

Live trap. Not sure what you'd bait it with though.

Forget what the wife says and use the pellet gun...

On a more serious note put some fruit or cabbage or tomatoes and it will lure them in. You can also add some sticks because groundhogs like to chew on wood.

Yeah, live trap works just fine. I get a couple of them under my shed every summer. Just put the trap where they are entering/exiting your yard or by what they are living under, and you should be good within' a couple days. We bait the trap with raw broccoli, lettuce, tomatoes, and apples. Live trap it and relocate it.

If she doesn't like that idea, call a pest/rodent control person and they'll take care of it.

If she'd rather spend the money than let you take care of it...let her do it instead of pestering you.

Your next day off, tell your wife to go shopping, maybe get you some beer and stuff she can make you sammiches with, then park your ass in a chair in the backyard armed with a .22 rifle with a scope and hollow points. Aim for headshots. When she comes home, grab a cold one and drink while she makes you the sammich. Eat the sammich while drinking another cold one, then show her the catch of the day. Problem solved, the man way.

I watched my friend pick one off with my compound bow (first time he ever shot it) and the groundhog was about half-run at a distance of 25 feet. Pinned that sucker to a railroad tie... It was a really great shot.

I'm not sure what a "HMR17 is...but I agree that a pellet gun is too small....it would have to be a lucky head shot in just the right place.

My thought would be that if it is stuck in a trap, I'd have a pretty good chance of getting a head shot or two off without too much trouble.

I've heard that there's some pellets you can spread that basically give off the scent of fox urine which scares them away from the area. Anyone ever try something like that?

Or you could get a cat. One of my cats brought an adult ground hog to the porch the other day. Mind you this cat is huge but it still made me laugh.

If you want the groundhogs to relocate, simply dig a large hole near where they enter your property. This trick has been used for generations by farmers who do not wish to harm the animals. Groundhogs are notoriously territorial and often fight for dominance, but they are also fond of living. The large hole (should be at least 70 cubic feet of ground displaced) will make them think that a monster groundhog has moved in, and they will vacate immediately. This is why you never see groundhogs near those yards with a built in pool and also why there is no documented evidence of a groundhog having ever been killed on a road inside a tunnel.

Find their hole or any hole where they run into
Get a garbage lid metal or plastic
I use "Sulfur bomb" they come 5 per package and use just one
Drop the bomb in the hole, put the lid on top cove the edges with dirt wait 10 minutes take the lid off.
Look around to see if you can see any smoke coming out of any other holes..... if you do drop one in that hole also and cover it.

Does this at 7:30 or 8:00 that should be about the time they all go back into hole for the evening...

I got one with a baseball bat. I was able to block him from going into his hole and he was really big and couldn't run that fast. Cornered him and hit him in the head. Lucky though because those thinks are mean.

If I remember correctly my neighbor had them under his barn and he used to drop gum in the holes. They chew it and it plugs up their digestive system.

Man up and get a real gun (no stinkin pellet gun!) and SHOOT the S.O.B.!!! Geez....does your wife carry our balls in her purse?

Never heard of a farmer that didn't want one or all of them dead!
