Next iPhone will be iPhone 4S; will feature Sprint and T-Mobile compatibility, analyst claims

In a note to investors on Friday, Jefferies & Company analyst Peter Misek claimed knowledge of Apple’s fifth-generation iPhone. While most are now in agreement that Apple will not unveil its new iPhone until September this year at the earliest, thereby breaking its annual summer release cycle for the first time, the feature set coming in Apple’s next iPhone remains a topic of debate. Misek’s channel checks found that the next iPhone will be called the “iPhone 4S,” and it will feature minor cosmetic updates, Apple’s A5 processor, better cameras and HSPA+ support. More interestingly, perhaps, Misek claims that the next-gen iPhone will be picked up by both Sprint and T-Mobile. Of course we already knew Apple was testing an iPhone compatible with T-Mobile’s network, but Misek’s note is the first confident claim that the device will launch on T-Mobile since our exclusive report. Regarding 4G LTE compatibility, Misek says the Qualcomm LTE chip Apple would use in a 4G model is not available in the quantities Apple would need for the huge production volumes that are expected. This claim jibes with earlier reports that Apple’s iPhone is not likely to support LTE until next year at the earliest.

I'd love to see it come to Sprint, but I will believe it when I see it.

I switched from Sprint to VZW as soon as they got the iPhone. I also found out my employer offers a 20% discount to VZW on phone bills and accessories.

Double win.

Pretty much what everyone has predicted. And T-Mobile is GSM right? So there's no reason it wouldn't be easy to add it to Iphone compatibility seeing as ATT is GSM as well. Although it might be a moot point if the ATT buyout goes through.

Well if that's the truth I am not leaning towards the Motorola Atrix.

4G really is just a marketing term. TMobile's "4G" is slower than AT&T's 3G network.

I actually just messed around with one of these on Saturday. A friend of mine got it after having an iPhone 3gs. I haven't messed with Android that much, but it was a very nice phone. Super fast.

Agreed. The iphone 3Gs wasn't worth the upgrade IMO, and going from the 3G to the iphone 4, I haven't noticed that much of an improvement other than the camera to be honest. And I still hate the iphone 4's shape compared to the 3G.

Verizon LTE on the thunderbolt is smoking fast.... android battery life still sucks though. I'm hoping the iPhone comes out on sprint, will get for me Wife. I'll be upgrading to the htc evo 3d.

Yeah I'll probably make the switch if it comes to Sprint. I'll be eligible for an upgrade around the same time it is released. I've been loyal to Blackberry for years, but they just can't hold a candle to the iPhone. I can't believe how good the image quality is from the 4's camera.

I'm wondering how they will structure the plans/billing if it comes to Sprint. They already require a $10 bump for "4G services", so I'm guessing the iPhone will require extra charges as well, despite not having 4G.

There will most definitely be the $10 upcharge for an iPhone. It is not just listed as a 4G upcharge anymore. It is now a smartphone charge. So all smartphone users now get the $10 upcharge on their plan.
