Netflix finally releases their Android app, only available for select phones
http://blog.netflix.com/2011/05/normal-0-false-false-false-en-us-x-none.htmlinitially

Hi, this is Roma De from the product team at Netflix.

We are thrilled to announce that we have begun to roll out a Netflix application for the Android platform. We are making the free app available for download from Android Market. The Market download will initially be available only on select phones that currently have the requisite playback support. We expect to quickly add to the number of phones that can download from Android Market as we work with ecosystem partners to expand playback support.

The Android platform is gaining rapid adoption in the mobile world and presents a great opportunity to reach more of our members. Because the platform has evolved so rapidly, there are some significant challenges associated with developing a streaming video application for this ecosystem. One of these challenges is the lack of standard streaming playback features that the Netflix application can use to gain broad penetration across all available Android phones. In the absence of standardization, we have to test each individual handset and launch only on those that can support playback. We are aggressively qualifying phones and look forward to expanding the list of phones on which the Netflix app will be supported. We anticipate that many of these technical challenges will be resolved in the coming months and that we will be able to provide a Netflix application that will work on a large majority of Android phones.

I've been using it for a while on my iPhone. Love it. The instant streaming selection is getting better and better... I've started watching the 1st season of Archer while at work lol.

• HTC Nexus One with Android 2.2, 2.3
• HTC Evo 4G with Android 2.2
• HTC G2 with Android 2.2
• Samsung Nexus S with Android 2.3
Who did HTC blow to get Netflix on all those phones first? The Incredible?! Really?! Not even the Incredible 2?

And no love for the Droid X or the Xoom or any tablets for that matter? What the fuck Netflix?!

There's more than a few headscratchers there. The Nexus S and Nexus One make sense. Those are Google Experience devices, and they always get the new stuff first. But the Xoom is also a Google Experience device, so it should have gotten it too. Unless they are holding off on releasing it for the Xoom because Google just released 3.1 which has the built in "movie store" where you can rent movies for $2.99. Maybe they withheld it from the Xoom because they know as soon as Netflix comes to it, there won't be a ton of sales on the movie store.

The Evo makes sense because it's Sprint's best selling Android phone. But then why wouldn't they pick Verizon and T-Mobile's best selling Android phones, too? The Incredible and G2 are far from the best selling devices at those carriers. And no AT&T phones? The only place where Android is losing to iPhone is at AT&T. Releasing Netflix for the Inspire or the Atrix would have gone a huge way in shrinking the gap between Android and iPhone sales at AT&T.

Oh well...I'll just wait it out. Even if you don't have one of those phones...knowing that Netflix is this close to launching completely is a good feeling. Now if the full version of Skype can just get going, I will be able to overcome just about every objection a customer has when looking at an iOS device and an Android device.

I watch tv shows on my lunch breaks. And while traveling, sometimes I'd rather just pull out my phone instead of a laptop or tablet...

I just can't imagine watching a show on that small of a screen, and having to hold my phone to do so. JMO.

I had mobile DVD players for my car about 5 years ago. They only had a 4.5 inch screen. Plenty big when riding in a car. So my Droid X will do just fine too.

SMH. We get it, you can't "imagine" watching anything on a phone..

A lot of us don't imagine it, we do it. Like I said, on lunch break I will pull out my iPhone and watch a show or two.. Been catching up with Archer this way.

I do that on my 24" monitor. :)

I downloaded the app last night and checked it out. It is cool, and the picture was good. It's just not for me. Don't get you panties all bunched up because I have an opinion. :p

I'll tell you one thing it's good for. Keeping the kids occupied when needed. Load up Spongebob and I'm good for 20 minutes or so. :)
