I was listening to the news on the radio and they said that because of failed levies, Canal Winchester "Pay to Participate" fees would be $600 per sport (OUCH!) and that Hilliard would not be offering Middle School sports?? Is that a done deal or will there be a last gasp effort to get another levy passed? No middle school sports would be a crushing blow to Hilliard sports programs!

My uncle is the canal tennis coach. I don't think he will have a boys or girls team at 600 a person

This hit Westerville, Watkins, and Reynoldsburg in the last three to five years. Welcome to the club. Everybody outside of Dublin and Upper Arlington will be hit with this. Watch what happens to Pickerington sports teams in the future. Its the way of public schools at this point with the economy. Dropping property values means less money coming into the district, plus massive state and federal cuts. Not any one groups fault, just the way it is. It sucks, but things go in cycles. Someday it will all come full circle...Hopefully

The way things are going in this State/Nation, with all the summer programs and club teams (JO, AAU, GBA, etc.) I'm surprised that HS sports have not become club sports, privately funded, etc.

I think we are heading in that direction ernest. We already see junior high sports being cut at certain schools and the kids playing club sports during those respective years of their lives.

If you want to play a certain sport (probably besides football) you have the opportunity to play it year round, if you live remotely close to a metropolitan area.

And how many sports are there where the actual "college recognition" comes from club ball anyway. My sister played D1 basketball SOLELY because of her AAU team.

The Ohio High School Lacrosse Association already has a club division in addition to Divisions 1 & 2. There is a club division state championship.
Being a club does shift the financial responsibility from the school system and gives coaches, boosters, etc. a little more control over their teams.

Westerville's "Pay to Participate" fees 5 years ago were $450 for HS and $225 MS per sport. Thank goodness the levy passed in my son's 6th grade spring election which then dropped them down to $100 for HS and $50 for MS. At the time, my son was a two sport athlete and we could never have afforded $450 a year for MS sports. If you own a house in westerville, you're probably paying more than the pay to play fee after the levy passed. It's just built into your mortgage payment now instead of you sending the pay to play check to school with your son. (And if you rent, your rent probably went up.) It all goes to the same place, people just seem more able to put it out of their minds when it is spread out over a 12 month mortgage payment then writing the check all ar once.
The sooner it all goes club, the better.

They are threatening to cut all of Duval County (Jacksonville, FL) HS Sports this coming year if they can't trim enough off of other programs $$.

There is an effort being made in Hilliard to push the BOE to offer MS sports pay to play instead of wiping them out completely.

I was surprised to learn that this wasn't even considered in the first place. Hilliard also missed the cut-off date to put up an Emergency levy in August in case the levy in May failed. OCC schools have already filled in the slots where Hilliard schools were in their Fall athletic schedules. I hope this pay to play option does in fact take shape.

watkins passed their levy but pay to play incressed from 90 to 110 in ms. and 200-225 in highschool, kinda wondering why i voted yes LOL. just wanted to post this for those that have their hopes on passing their next levy, you will still have money issues, another ten years we will be a club sport guranteed.

Yes.....CW will have a levy on the Fall ballot. PTP is $300 this year....then scheduled to rise to $450 the year after.....and then, if nothing changes $600 the year after that.Cthelites;760511 wrote:Done deal!
