Kenton Wildcats On ESPN For Season Opener - News Dept. on 1:11:22 PM EDT
The Kenton Wildcats will again open the football season by taking on the Coldwater Cavaliers, but this year, the game will not be on a Friday night.
Coach Mike Maul said instead, the game will be played Sunday evening August 28, and will be televised live on ESPN. The coach said, "We got a call last week that they were interested in doing our first game with Coldwater. I thought originally they were maybe wanting us to move to Cincinnati to play, or Dayton. But they wanted to go ahead and just do the game at Coldwater. I notified them that they would maybe be getting a call from ESPN, and they had been contacted. To make a long story short, Thursday, Friday and Saturday games are going to be teams from California, Florida and Texas. Ohio games are going to be played on Sunday, because Ohio is one of few states that allow you to pay on Sunday. Our game will be at 6 that evening assuming everything falls into place with funding, and they feel really good about that happening. We are exited about it, they are excited about it. College football won;t start yet, NFL won't start, so it should be well viewed."
Coach Mauk adds that the team will be motivated by the chance, "Our kids would be excited to play any day of the week, but this is great opportunity and the kids should be even more motivated. Another aspect, Coldwater has great community support, Kenton has great community support. We have a great band, they have a great band. So this is everything good you want in sports, and a great way to kick-off the high school football season."

It is not a done deal.
The CW AD describes it as 90% probable.
They were contacted awhile ago about this by a marketing company out of Illinois and everything got hammered out. Final word was to be early this week but recently was reported that there is a slight delay and it may be another week before it is finalized.
It is NOT a done deal and fall through at any time before it is finalized. It is in the hands of ESPN and their sponsors at this point.

Still no word from the marketing company about this possible deal.
Many people are talking it is a done deal (I was 2 hours outta MAC country yesterday and someone even mentioned it....but I set them straight) but it is not. I think the longer it drags out the more likel it gets denied.

It will be first posted on that twitter account. It is not official until the Coldwater AD gets word. He is very quick at posting pertinant news and you can 'read it first' on twittter

What's in it for the teams/schools other than being on TV?

Nope. Currently listed as the #5 QB in the 2012 class by Scout.

He is the reason why this game might be on TV. No way they would put some hicktown like Coldwater on national TV if a top player wasnt involved.

That makes sense, this must be his senior year. It seems like he's been there forever.

Yes, Mauk is the ONLY reason.

Yeah..with his brother playing like 4 years, and then him for 4 years...and when they allowed some of those player play after "the incident" and hear people villify his dad/coach/AD then yeah the Mauk name has been talked about for awhile.
Mauk is the only reason this game is on TV. Why else would ESPN want to broadcast a game between a town that used to be named buzzards glory against the armpit of ohio?

June..CW used to be called Buzzard's Glory.
Still no word on this....I think the longer it goes the more likely it gets squashed. It is in the hands of ESPN and the sponors right now. The marketing company has presented it to them.
Wonder if the sponsors want bigger schools in this matchup?

COldwater AD talked to the marketing firm on Tuesday and the marketing firm is meeting with ESPN several times this week. The first 2 games on Sunday have already been approved. ESPN wants a "bigger" game, but the marketing firm has told ESPN that this is the biggest game available. Two things in favor of the CW/Kenton game are 1) Not many States allow games on Sundays and 2) Several states don't start the season that early.

Talked with espn rep today and they said it looks doubtful for cavs/kenton fb. Not enough money draw for sponsors in the market.

That sucks. It'd be a great thing for both schools and the West-Central Ohio football scene in general.

Yeah....when the AD told me of this in early April I was surprised. I am not a fan of HS games on ESPN and such and I said, well at least this is some regular game we have been scheduled and not some setup like the Herby thing where some teams travel thousands of mmiles for a TV game ya know.
They were told within a week they would know for sure, that it was a 90% done deal. When a week became a month I figured ESPN and the sponsors bucked the idea.
Oh well......I prefer fri night games anywayss

Just read on wktn.com (the kenton radio station) that this is not going to happen. Too bad, would have been fun to watch some small town boys on ESPN.

Yeah. Sorry. Didnt post it on this site......2 days ago they contacted the school saying that ESPN will be reducing the number of games they will carry.
and this one got the ax.
No worries....still will be a packed house, and still will have a 3-4k 50/50
