Still up so might as well get tomorrow evening's game started as well. Both Richard and LeCure were solid their first times to the mound in 2011.

In three career starts against the Reds, in 13 innings he has allowed 14 runs.

I really wanted to go .500 on the trip. A win tomorrow world wrap that up, and leave Wednesday to be the icing on the cake.

I love the way Phillips is playing. He's my fav red and last year was rough. But his approach has been awesome and he's not trying to do too much, plus going to right field a lot.

When Stubbs and Bruce start hitting. Lookout

Anytime we win out on the west coast, I'm happy. Because in year's past you couldnt always take that for granted.

true...but when they start hitting someone else will be slumping...that is how it goes.

.500 on the weset coast is a good trip for the reds.

I see LeCure pitching 5 or 6 solid innings like last time. Joey Votto goes deep tonight. Also, he hits a HR.

BP on hitting 2nd:
Brandon Phillips has taken pretty well to hitting second in the Reds' lineup. He's batting .410 with a .455 on-base percentage.

He says it was all in the preparation.

"Spring was different for me from the year before," he said. "I had a different role. I came into spring knowing I was going to hit leadoff or I was going to be second. I knew I had to have a different approach. I had to become a different player for the team instead of for myself.

"In the past, when I was hitting fourth, it was all about RBI and trying to be the big dude for the team. I came to spring training this year to try to be the trendsetter and get things started for Joey Votto, Jonny Gomes and Scott Rolen."

Reds manager Dusty Baker decided against putting Phillips in the leadoff role Monday night -- even with Drew Stubbs out of the lineup.

"Instead of having two or three guys move around, you just have one," Baker said. "Brandon is doing pretty good hitting in front of Joey. Plus, (Chris) Heisey's led off a lot before in the minor leagues."

Heisey hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning, providing the winning margin in Cincinnati's 3-2 victory at San Diego.

Phillips' best year came in 2007, when he hit .288 with 30 home runs, 94 RBI and 33 steals. He hit mostly second that year.

"I like hitting there," he said. "It's fun, especially when you're winning."

The Reds have really hit Richard (thanks to Jamie Ramsey for the research): Phillips is 3-for-6 with a homer, Votto is 2-for-4 with a homer, Rolen is 2-for-10 with two homers, Gomes is 3-for-7, Bruce is 3-for-5. Only Stubbs (0-for-6) and Janish (0-for-1) don’t have hits off him.

Drew Stubbs cf
Brandon Phillips 2b
Joey Votto 1b
Scott Rolen 3b
Jonny Gomes lf
Ryan Hanigan c
Jay Bruce rf
Paul Janish ss
Sam LeCure p

Homer Bailey threw three innings of one-run ball in a simulated game at the Reds complex in Goodyear today. He allowed four hits, walked none and struck out five.
I know its only a simulated game, but its a good sign that Bailey didn't walk anyone in his first "real game" action since spring training.

BP smoked a liner up the middle for a 1 out single, followed by a single by Joey.

And Gomes slices one up the right field line for a RBI double, scoring BP. 1-0 Reds.

Hanigan makes a good, but fruitless, bid for an RBI going the other way also!

A walk and a productive out give at least two Padres a chance for an RBI single.

Neither can do it so the Reds lead 1-0 after one inning.

Great play by Rolen for the 2nd night in a row to save at least a run each night. Both on kind of what you'd call broken plays, not routine things you see. Rolen excels in knowing just what is needed, and can do it excellently on things you really can't practice like the catch and tag last night and this tonight.

Upton went Babe Ruth on a near 500 ft shot to left center.

Pretty even 1-1 game thru 4. 55 and 57 pitches, 3 and 4 baserunners, 3 and 4 Ks, both RBIs on opposite field hits.

Could be big for the Reds. Current weak link Bruce leads off with a hit, then a botched play gets another runner on.

BP gets a little anxious with a RISP, and pops up the first pitch, but Reds lead again, 2-1.

BP hitting 2nd is so obvious...and him going opposite field so often is fun to watch. He took a lot of silly swings batting 4th and it was sadly obvious...but Dusty left him there forever and ever.
