Mayor Thomas M. Menino said yesterday that he is expanding his ban on sugar-sweetened drinks in schools to include all city properties and functions, a sweeping restriction that means that calorie-laden soft drinks, juices with added sugar, and sports drinks like Gatorade will no longer be offered in vending machines, concession stands, and city-run meetings, programs and events.........

When does it stop?? I think the smoking ban is an infringement on the freedoms of a private business person. This ban is an infringement on the freedoms of anyone who lives in or visits Boston.

I was never a fan of schools putting vending machines in the first place. Only reason they did so was the $$ contracts with the likes of pepsi.
but to ban then at concession stands and such? That is dumb. Pretty sure our school took our, or is, taking out pop and candy machines in our school

Silly law IMO. But, at least it was done on a local level where it might better represent what Bostonians want and could be much more readily overturned in the future. I mean, Orange Juice, with no added sugar is pretty high in caloric content.

+1 Although I am far from liberal and believe soda and high sugar drinks are far too prevelent in today's society, I would never want a law passed that bans a drink. Boston is turning into San Fransico where you can't grill on tuesday's or something and can't buy a happy meal. SMH.

Well, in San Francisco, you can buy a happy meal, but it doesn't mean what you think, and you probably wouldn't want one.

Though I'm not a "Teabagger" in the contemporary sense, I do get genuinely frustrated at idiocy. Sue me.

Well...why should sugary drinks and caffinated drinks be sold in schools or public buildings? What did people do before vending machines? I bet they drank water and schools sold milk. Is it liberalism to remove them or liberalism to allow them there in the first place?
Is it wrong to allow unhealthy drinks and foods to be prevalent or is it wrong to restrict them?
People can go to the store and make their choice. Choices don't have to be available on every street corner, every school and every public building. Buy it at the store and carry it to work!
Now, they should be available at the concession stands for sports.
