Heartwarming story and all, but how did the kid's parents let him (a ten-year old) spend $8,500 on a piece of sports memorabilia?

I would've loved to have $8,500 in my back account when I was 10.

My guess is the parents saw a way to get their kid a little notoriety and/or the dad to meet The Fridge.
