The new superintendent in Youngstown has announced a massive restructuring, which will make East a more "normal" HS, Chaney becomes a science/engineering/math/art specialty school. All athletics for students at both schools will be offered though East... so that is now their only football team.

Something definitely needed done, and the best way to get anything done around here is to bring in an outsider like they did, who will do what he thinks best without any influences to steer him another way. It's the only district in the state in academic emergency, and they just came out of fiscal emergency on Friday (plan should save $2M/year.)

So, will they be any good with all the students at their disposal?

I can understand these moves because of the schools being in an academic emergency. But this has to really feel like a kick in the teeth to all Chaney alumni. There is so much tradition at that school, especially within the football program. I can remember when there were five public high schools in the city of Youngstown.

At least the school will still exist, even if the teams do not.

It always hurts to break tradition, but I don't see Youngstown really having a choice anymore.

Well i have heard for a few years that if Campbell don't get there spending under control we will be knows as Youngstown Memorial Red Devils. Or better know as they use to be called back in the day the East Youngstown Memorial High School. Unless something changed?

...I can actually remember (6) public schools in Youngstown (Rayen-East-North-South-Wilson-Chaney) but I couldn't agree more with your point about Chaney alum and the strong tradition that it once had.
Times are changing when it comes to educating kids these days...some good and some bad, but not seeing a football team from the West Side of Ytown will be missed by all.

Look for Fitch to get a big enrollment spike. Same can be said for the megapowers. East will still suffer, too many 'off the field' things will be goin on. What's the next step when they find out this won't solve the problem? It's really sad to see what this area has become.
Chaney has to be pretty close to being the school in the Mahoning Valley that produced the most players to the NFL over the years, such a tradition gone. So sad. RIP Chaney

It's so sad to see this happen.. Tradition don't mean anything anymore. But you got to do whats best for the children. Hell i remember back when it was more important to play a football then settle a teachers strike. I never heard of a high school football team playing games trough a strike. EX. Campbell 89!!!
