Two straight perfect innings by Correia, whose outing is getting more and more solid. Two runs through five innings, with only one earned. It'd be nice to get at least one more out of him. Currently at 72 pitches, so it depends on what his count is considering it's the beginning of the season on a cool day.

Two-out two-run blast by McCutchen and it's 6-2. Ryan Dempster, you eat shit and you like it!

Ah, one of my most fond memories of last year after Lopez, Carrasco, etc. were traded: the middle relief making innings far more interesting than I want them to be...

Looking at some tickets online right now, I want to be a part of the magic this season. With two teenage boys in tow, the $35 all you can eat seats look like a bargain.

Damn. They could have blown this one open in the ninth. One out, bases loaded and Chicago's Notre Dame fuck had just walked two straight. But Overbay lined into a double play.

Imagine it be Hanrahan in for the save in the ninth.

1-0!

It's always nice to enjoy that shining moment when your team is above .500...even if you know that moment might only last until their next game.

Perhaps its bad luck or a curse. Pirates have won the opener five years in a row. Let us pray.

While watching Friday Night Fights, I caught an ESPN scroll tidbit that is the cherry on top of this victory.

Neil Walker can now be mentioned in the same breath as Roberto Clemente. They are the only two players in Pirate history to hit grand slams in the season-opening game. With him being a guy from around Pittsburgh, that makes it even more cool.

I have Walker on my fantasy baseball team so that was great on two fronts yesterday.

Midway through the fourth, Pirates up 2-0 on Fat Psycho Meltdown Bitch and the Cubs. Nothing to get overly excited about, as Maholm is good for a four-run meltdown of his own more often than not. That's been the defining thing about his career: being the guy who will give you 3-5 great innings and then completely implode. Or implode right off the bat and recover to wind up giving you a few good innings after the initial carnage.

Six strong innings by Maholm. Cubs threatened a couple times, but he's gotten out of jams. Obviously would like a couple more runs, but so far, they've played a good game.

And Garrett Jones immediately blasts a solo shot to make it 3-0. Damn, I'm good!

Maholm a good job with 6.2 IP and no more than one earned run possible.
