gotta play better Saturday....nice win tonght, was the D that tuff or did Continental's D take Dylan out of his game, or did we run the O through Seger to through Continental off, or Im I way off? Its hard to break down the game in that arena....it's so different

#55 Neil Gingerich played a great great game last night with 10 points and a couple rebounds off the bench....

Hesston, it seemed like whenever you guys got in a crunch, the ball went to Seger down low, and he came through just about every time. Kaufman didn't attempt many shots, from what I saw, and Boyd didn't get many open looks. They did guard Kaufman very well, but that's why this team is so good - many, many weapons. Even the tall kid off the bench came in and played some very good minutes getting some rebounds and buckets. Hiland did not play very well, but they won by 14. Good luck on Saturday!

A step away Hiland shoots down Continental to move into gold-medal game

By Aaron Dorksen
The Wooster Daily Record

COLUMBUS -- It didn't take a college professor to explain the Continental divide that took place in the Div. IV state semifinal contest at Ohio State's Value City Arena Thursday night.

All 10,243 fans in attendance could witness the combination of size, talent and depth that enabled Hiland to break up the Continental High team in a 70-56 victory.

The second-ranked Hawks (26-1) won their 21st straight game. They'll try to win the area's first state boys basketball championship since Orrville in 1996 when they meet Canal Winchester Harvest Prep (22-5) in the title game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Hiland used a 33-2 advantage in bench scoring and 42-28 edge for points in the paint to shoot down the No. 9-ranked Pirates.

Junior Seger Bonfiant, the Hawks 6-foot-7 sixth man, scored a game-high 23 points on 7-for-12 shooting to account for the bulk of those game-changing statistics.

"Dylan (Kaufman) always finds who has the hot hand and I had it for a while," Bonifant said. "We all know who has the hot hand and we always find each other."

Kaufman, Ohio's Div. IV co-Player of the Year, said Continental was extremely quick to defend him at the 3-point line, so he had no problem passing to open teammates on the post.

The Hawks' 6-5 junior point guard scored nine points -- five under his average -- and attempted just six shots. He made a big impact in other ways, though, grabbing a game-high eight rebounds and also leading everyone in assists (four) and blocks (two).

Kaufman was at his best after the Pirates rallied from 14 down with 7:11 left in the third quarter. Continental cut the deficit to 53-49 with 6:29 left on a layup by John Spitnale (team-high 15 points, six rebounds).

Hiland went on a 7-0 run started by a blocked shot from Kaufman, followed by two layups he made and then an assist to Jalen Miller.

It was basically on to the title game when Noah Boyd connected on a foul shot to finish the run, pushing the lead back out to 60-51 with 2:14 left.

"It was a hard-fought game," Hiland coach Mark Schlabach said. "It's tough out there and I think it took a little while for both teams to get settled in out there. I think one of the things people in the stands don't understand is that it takes a while to get used to playing in such a big arena.

"When we got up by 14 to start the third quarter we knew they'd make a run, but I thought our team responded very well."

Most coaches would love to have their team have trouble adjusting and still shoot 59 percent from the floor in the first half, which Hiland did after making 13-of-22 shot attempts.

Bonifant scored nearly half of his team's points with 15 markers as the Hawks led 32-22 at the break. Neil Gingerich grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back in for bucket right before the halftime buzzer.

Hiland connected on 7-of-10 shots in the first quarter, helped by a pair of buckets each by Jalen Miller and Seger Bonifant to lead 15-9 after one quarter.

Although Hiland has been proficient from the 3-point arch, it went just 1-for-8 from long range against the Pirates' speedy perimeter players.

The Hawks had no problems changing their focus, though.

"They got it inside to their credit," said Continental coach Kevin Homier, whose school is located about 30 miles west of Findlay. "When we have 5-10, 5-10, 5-10 and they go 6-5, 6-7, 6-5, it doesn't take much. ... I thought it was an uphill fight all night for us.

"We really struggled with their length."

Still, a scrappy Continental team that utilized a Princeton-style motion offense kept fighting and cut the margin to 49-44 late in the third quarter.

However, Kaufman found Boyd for a layup and then came away with a steal and layup to send the Hawks into the final quarter leading 53-44.

Jalen Miller added 13 points for Hiland, while the 6-6 Gingerich chipped in 10 points off the bench on 5-for-5 shooting.

The Hawks settled in even more during the second half to wind up shooting a sizzling 65 percent from the floor (27-for-41), compared to just 45 percent for Continental (19-for-42).

After the game the extremely focused Hawks did not seem too thrilled with their performance.

"I really don't think we played good defense because we only gave up 27 points against McDonald (in the Canton Regional final)," Bonifant said. "We have to get stops and rebounds ... that's what fuels us on offense."

Schlabach could only smile as he listened to the comment from one of the key players who's helped Hiland to just its third state title game in program history. The 1992 Hawks won the only championship, while the 1962 team finished second.

"They set a high standard at the defensive end," Schlabach said.

That kind of determination and talent now has the Hawks one step away from something that would make them finally celebrate -- a state championship.
