i think a deep tourny run would have saved him on a year to year contract

He would have at least had a prayer. The team absolutely giving up last Friday obviously removed any doubt.

He has a great career ahead of him in the TV industry.

I think it's a combination of it already being determined months ago and what happen in the Tourney. I think they already had plans to fire him, but if Tennessee would have made the Final Four, then likely he is still the coach.

That all depends. You keep him, there wont be postseason next year (likely, and there still may be a ban). By firing him, Tenn may save themselves some penalties.

I'd love to see him do color with Gus Johnson

You don't think anyone will take a chance on him?

I do, though he may get Kelvin Sampson treatment and be kicked out of NCAA for a couple years.
Of course, for Sampson it worked out, he is a lead candidate to be a head NBA coach if anything opens up...

Any rumors about who might be a realistic target?

I have a feeling they go after Brad Stevens, and he doesn't even give them the time of day.
Maybe Buzz Williams of Marquette or Chris Mooney of Richmond would be realistic targets.
The take on what really happened with Pearl from Doug Gottlieb is telling. Basically, he didn't break the rules, or enough to even have anyone care, but the lie got compounded with another lie and then more lies from his assistants. I like Bruce Pearl but had he just come clean and reported minor violations like every school does, he would still have a job. This is actually pretty similar to what happened at OSU with Tressel.

Pearl will be back. Give him 2-3 years of ESPN broadcasting or a job at a middle of the pack mid-major and a big school will take a stab at him. He is ratings gold for whatever school hires him as the networks set up shop on campus covering the whole saga.

We'll see about Shaka Smart.
He's coaching a VCU team, that by-in-large, was recruited by Anthony Grant. He is 53-20 as coach of VCU, is in the Sweet 16 and will get some looks, but who knows if he's a homerun mid-major hire.
I think Brad Brownell is a name that has been thrown out there but not talked about widely because he just took a job with Clemson. Some of the other openings would be upgrades however, including Oklahoma, Tennessee and Arkansas.

Pearl will get a job. If he wants to continue coaching, he'll have no problem getting hired.
As mentioned, Sampson got a job again, Calipari is still coaching, Billy Clyde got another job, Eddie Sutton continued coaching, the list can go on and on. These "violations" are just a small bump in the road for many coaches.

Brad Stevens would be dumb to go to Tennessee. He doesn't need money, his wife makes big bucks.
He [probably] turned down big offers last year to stay at Butler. He's worshiped at Butler. His best bet is staying put.
If there is a Big 10 job open in the next few years, maybe go to one there (say, Michigan State?). I also think a Big East or ACC school would fit him too. I just am not too sold on Tennessee and SEC basketball. He'll be shopped around a bit if he goes that route, in my opinion.
