What is this? I've never seen this "extension." I've only seen .com, .org, and .net.

No. I just saw an intercompany email address that has that "extension" and I've never seen it before. I tried Googling it to find out more, but it was all too confusing.

Whatever happend to .cc? Few years ago a huge radio station in Cincy was touting they were opening a site with the domain .cc and I had heard about it in other instances.

It was supposed to be the next big thing...and have not heard much about it.

There are a ton of domain extensions out there. They don't get used because the idea of using non-.com domains never took of. Re: .cc

.gay (coming soon, I believe)

Those are what I can remember. It's not even half of all the ones out there, but those are the ones I can remember seeing.

That's because for awhile, Google ranked anything with a .gov, .mil, or .edu the highest, and then .com, .org, and .net. Below that was .info. Anything else pretty much got no Google love.

That's one reason. The other killer, and the reason I would talk clients out of it, is that people will naturally visit a website using .com first. It's ingrained in our searching habits. So if a company registers mycompany.cc because mycompany.com was already taken, they will have to rely on search engines and their own marketing.

Many times, people hear a commercial that interests them (let's say for Widgets, Inc.), and will go home and type in widgets.com or widgetsinc.com to try and find them. If you registered .cc, you just lost a potential customer, probably to a competitor.

I catch your drift but that's untrue.

Even though both parties have done shitty on the net neutrality front. Republicans hate net neutrality because they think it's a restrictive regulation but it's really quite the opposite and Democrats are too big of pussies at the moment to really stand up for it.

Maybe domain buyers should unionize and collectively bargain what extensions and the prices of each to buy. If we don't like it, we can strike by shutting down all websites.
