Rumor has it that when Dover unveils the plans for the new high school they will include an 80 acre campus with a new 15,000+ seat stadium that will replace the historic Crater Stadium built in the early 30's.

I think it's sad and wasteful to start from scratch but more seating is needed. There is no way to expand the visitor side at Crater without buying up the houses that sit about 15 feet away.

Thoughts.....

Loved playing at Crater stadium, but didn't like watching a game their (visitor stands).

Didn't they just put a lot of money into Crater stadium a few years ago? I know it would be hard to expand and add more seating, but just think...Dover could be one of the few high schools to have a "bowl" type stadium or make it four sided like Fawcett or Harding Stadium.

I'd be sad to see Crater Stadium go. A very neat Historical piece of architecture and football tradition.

What does Dover need a 15k capacity stadium for?

I've heard quite a few things about the proposed new high school from some pretty good sources in town. I can't say that this is completely false, however it is the first that I have heard about a new football stadium.

And I agree with Zwick, what the hell do we need a stadium that seats 15k plus for? That place is full maybe twice a year, depending on where the New Phila game is played at. Excluding Zanesville with their updated stadium, Crater stadium has the most visitor seating of any place we play at all year.

I'm hoping it's not true, my source was via the design team. Hopefully the plans just include the area for future expansion.

Completely false rumor.
The only effect this new school proposition has on Crater is that the planned wrestling room that was included in the stadium improvement plan is on hold as the wrestling room would then be at the new H.S. instead of at Crater. Right now all stadium improvements are on hold except something will be done to the playing surface but it will NOT be field turf unless some private citizen or company writes a check for about $700,000. Either they will plow up the field and plant new grass or plow then lay sod.

They will have a hard enough time passing a school levy for a new school. There is no way they are dumb enough to try including a new stadium to this.

Dover would've had the stadium renovation done by now if everyone and their brothers would've stayed out of it. Too many cooks in the kitchen screwed everything up.

With budget cuts on the horizon, maybe they should hold off a sec.

They can't hold off, because the state's portion's is only available for 1 year. Dover should find out sometime around June whether they'll even get the funding from the state. I agree however, it will be a tough sell with the current situation of the economy.

15,000 seats is about triple what they would need... It would be insane to put that many seats in there..

There is no money from the state to build football stadiums, especially 15,000 seat ones. The boosters might do it or a permanent improvement levy might be used, but not on the states dime.
