Today a couple friends of mine got robbed down in dayton. They were answering an add off of craigs list to buy a motorcycle and some engine parts. They were held at gun point and robbed. afterwards they followed the guys until the cops caught them. heres the link for the news report.

I guess I've been lucky. I've bought and sold a ton of stuff on craigslist and the biggest problem I've run into is someone setting up a time to meet to buy something and then just never hearing from them again.

These kinds of occurrences are pretty rare. And if it hadn't been craigslist, these guys would have figured out some other way to get people there with a load of cash in their pockets.

Probably hard to do so with large items...but my suggestion would be to meet someone in a public area.

Ive bought and sold tons of stuff off of craigs list. This is the third time Ive heard of this happening. Its pretty bad that it happened to my friends. The robbers are pretty freaking stupid if your gonna rob someone wouldnt you take their phone keys and what ever else they had lol. Talk about the worlds dumbest criminals.

Better yet, some of the police dept's in central Ohio have said that their lots are always available for lawful transactions

I've actually found the last two places I've lived off of Craig's list. Both were great, and was one of the main way I found a place to stay when I moved from Ohio to Maryland/DC.

I think common sense has to be used when buying anything online regardless of the site.Always meet at a public place with people around and be prepared for something to go wrong,that way their are no surprises.I hope they spend time in jail for this shit.

I have bought tickets many times over craigslist but i always meet the person in a Mcdonalds near their house. The police can almost always trace email back to the person as well.

I've made a couple hundred bucks selling UK tickets the past two years. $250 off the Tennessee game last year alone.

I've sold a few things on craigslist and I've also had the problem with people who no-show. Most of the stuff I sell is large or farm related so they almost always have to come to my house. It freaks me out a little, but so far I haven't had any problems.

I bought concert ickets off, maybe EBAY a while back and picked them up at the guy's house.

Really, how is craigslist different than the old days of newspaper adds or some of the trade pubs that listed cars/boats for sale by owner? Really unless the person is a dumb serial killer, they aren't inviting your to their house. Although I suppose in these days of house squatting you never know.

If you're selling a big ticket item, always a risk of someone coming to your house and robbing you or stealing the item.

Different times, I guess. Not many things can't be mailed or shipped, so if it's car/boat/bike you should probably just meat at the DMV and transfer title and make the exchange. I don't know, at the end of the day I figure Craigslist or not, the risk of a random hold-up is about the same. I'd be far more concerned about a major scammer on Craigslist trying to steal my bank account or defraud me than petty robbery.

I've had many bad experiences, though to be fair they all involved the adult services section...

I bought a couch a few years ago...turned out to be a little Asian family. They let me pay for it that day and then make arrangements to have it picked up a few days later. I think it would be common sense to only meet in a public place and take any precautions you need...but there are a lot of idiots out there.

Nah, downtown is pretty tame compared to many of the areas in which I supervise. It's calmed down since they switched the RTA hub from Main Street. I can't say I've ever been given the "drug wave" downtown, but I've sure as hell had it happen numerous times elsewhere in the city.

Same experience for me. Moved from Toledo to DC in October and found two pretty good places to live off of craigslist.

I bought a beater work car off craigslist last winter (2009). No problems.
