Tanner guided the Pirates to their last World Series title in 1979. Maybe their last one ever.

Class guy. Very upbeat.

Not that they're related, but it has been a rough week for Pittsburgh sports. Losing the Super Bowl. Malkin being lost for the season and the Pens dealing with a rash of injuries. And now the passing of Tanner.

True^

He came to my school one time and gave a motivational speech. It was great. I also met him at his restaurant in New Castle, Pa. He was there and came over and talked to us for awhile about baseball.

The skipper of the "Lumber Company"/We Are Family"! What a great man Tanner was, always upbeat and energetic about his ball club which trickled down to his players. That 79 team came back from being down 3-1 to the Orioles in the World Series and it was Tanner's optimism that drove them to that title. Then again, when you had pitchers like Blyleven, Candelaria, Kison, Rooker, Robinson and Tekulve coming out of the pen it made it easier to win and what a team they fielded too.......Stargell, Parker, Garner, Madlock, Moreno, etc, etc........what a lineup!

RIP Chuck!

That '79 series was awesome. Stargell is/was my favorite player of all time. Seems like every time you saw Tanner he was smiling. RIP Skip.
