Is starting to form his own coaching staff. His first move was to fire OC Mike Heimerdinger. Heimerdinger was diagnosed with cancer in November and is currently undergoing cancer treatments.

Fair move or foul on the timing of this firing?

I cannot blame the HC for bringing in his own staff. Matter of fact, I think the natural way to build a team is for teh HC to bring in the guys he wants to fulfill his staff. He is going to be graded on W's and L's...and anyone who has EVER coached wants to be win, or lose, doing it his way with his staff in place.

Was unfortunate he has cancer but what can he do?

I find it more interesting that he got rid of the guy who also interviewed for the head coaching position.

Agree with this. It may seem heartless to many but it's unfortunately part of the business. Munchak isn't going to dive on that grenade to be the "good guy" if the OC doesn't fit his plans.

You mean he got rid of a direct competitor? How shocking... haha

On a different note, the firing of Heimerdinger has nothing to do with cancer. So now we're going to start taking into account peoples personal stuff when making business decisions? Sounds like a slippery slope to me.

Perhaps they could have been more discreet and let him resign for health reasons? Heimerdinger was quoted saying, "Yea, anytime you're fired it sucks."

They handled this with a lack of class.

man up, it's a business. Just because he had cancer doesn't mean he would've been right for the OC job.

It sucks for him, but was the new guy supposed to keep someone on staff he doesn't want just because he has cancer?

Sure, they could have given him the chance to "resign" (and maybe they did), but then it looks like he left because he was pissed that he didn't get the HC job, so in terms of PR it would make sense to make them fire you.

This.

And why would a head coach keep a guy that doesn't fit his coaching staff?

So he still has health insurance for 11 more months. That's good to hear and what I would expect.
