Superbowl Blessing of the Miami Dolphins

As a suffering Dolphin fan, I noticed that on several occasions a team that the Dolphins beat during the regular season won the Superbowl. This didn't bode well for the Steelers, as somehow they beat the Dolphins late, while the Packers lost to the Dolphins this year in OT, 23-20. I was thinking that I knew the Dolphins were the only team to beat the Bears in the 85 Superbowl Shuffle season, on a Monday night 38-24.

I didn't realize how extensive this trend was until I checked after the Superbowl tonight. It has happened more than a couple time. Mind you, they have lost a few times to the eventual champs, and some year they both beat and lost to them, but ....

2010- Dolphins 23, Packers 20
2004- Dolphins 29, Patriots 28
2001- Dolphins 30, Patriots 10
2000- Dolphins 19, Ravens 6
1998- Dolphins 31, Broncos 21
1993- Dolphins 16, Cowboys 14 (thanks Leon Lett I think)
1987- Dolphins 21, Redskins 21
1985- Dolphins 38, Bears 24

All of the teams on the right proceeded to win the Superbowl at the end of the season.

Weird. Strange. It's not a curse, not sure it is a blessing, but sure is odd or peculiar. So if the Dolphins beat you, you rally the troops and become a better team. Most years they did not play the Superbowl winner in this 25 year span, but when they did, it either brought out the best in the Dolphins or the worst in the Patriots. BTW, last year the Phins lost to the Saints, after being up by I want to say 14 or 17 points in the 3rd period before Brees lit them up for 4 TDs in the 2nd half.

I bet a stronger trend could be found if someone had the time. Cool though, I guess.

Thought there may be numbers or stats people with some logical explanation. Remembering that they don't all play each other every year, I am guessing that 50-75% of the times the inferior team beat the eventual world champs. Kind of strange. For example, the Dolphins lost to the Browns by 3 this year, the Steelers by 1, and beat the Packers in OT 23-20.

What world champs? They're the NFL champs.
