I'm surprised because it's halfway through the season, but not shocked he transfered. This is the 3rd kid that's all of a sudden left the program this year.

Seems like the young fella was upset about losing his starting role and chose to run instead of fight to regain it.

If the young man wants to leave mid-season like this, I'll hold the door open for him. Seemed like a good kid, but he wasn't happy with his role, missed the west coast, and didn't exactly mesh very well with teammates the past couple years. Part of me actually likes this move. UNC is no contender, and won't be until they can get more guys in. This opens the door for Marshall to get a lot of minutes. I still think UNC is a 64 team this year, which will be very valuable for this team. Depending on what guys like Henson and Barnes do with the draft, this may be the best thing for next year. If Marshall can get 28-30m a game for the rest of the season, it could be huge for UNC next year if all the guys come back. These departures have hurt Roy lately in recruiting. Knox was a last second plan which is actually paying off quite well this year. However, he hasn't recruited a PG in this class, but I bet that changes. I'm just scared to see Strickland running the point for 10m a game now.

It's certainly not unexpected that you would hold this opinion of Larry Drew II, but, in a not identical but similar situation concerning lost court time, not share it with regard to the sudden departure of Taylor King.Seems like the young fella was upset about losing his starting role and chose to run instead of fight to regain it.
This is a sad day for a fan of Duke. Larry was one of my most beloved Tar Heels. I'll never forget the way he would just look into his teammates eyes with that steely stare, and then throw the ball into the main seating area.

Sounds like a big pussy to me. There for 3yrs, losing starting job just recently, still playing significant minutes...but bolts. Typical of this day and age of many athletes....the "me" generation. Instread of sucking it up and working harder for the TEAM....lets see if the grass is greener on the other side. It wont' be. Poor decision.

I thought Taylor King was in way over his head at duke and at Nova. He didn't have starting material skills at schools that compete for championships.Did he start for duke for a season and then lose time? It's certainly not unexpected that you would hold this opinion of Larry Drew II, but, in a not identical but similar situation concerning lost court time, not share it with regard to the sudden departure of Taylor King.
How could anyone say it any better.Sounds like a big pussy to me.

No. But Taylor King did go from averaging about 10 points per game through the season's first 18 games in 2007-08, including games of 27 points, 18 points (versus Michigan), 15 points (versus Wisconsin) and 15 points (versus Temple), to playing a combined 40 minutes, the duration of a single game, over the season's last eight contests. Over that time span, King scored 16 points and hit two three-pointers. For a kid who considers himself a scoring machine and the best shooter on the planet, those statistics indicate walking papers. The coaches at Duke, however, must have felt he wasn't pulling his weight in certain aspects of his life.I thought Taylor King was in way over his head at duke and at Nova. He didn't have starting material skills at schools that compete for championships.Did he start for duke for a season ans them lose time?
Insert "Seems like the young fella was upset about losing his role and chose to run instead of fight to regain it" here.
I believe Three 6 Mafia did when they caroled, "I say weak ass, you say bitch."How could anyone say it any better.

This is beyond ridiculous. Drew wanted to be the starter, and he realized that he would no longer be in that position. Honestly, though, he was still getting about 50% of the minutes at the point, and was performing much better off the bench, but he was apparently disappointed that the keys had been turned over to Marshall. The thing that I don't get is, why in the hell would you just quit in the middle of the damn season? Are you kidding me? Why not finish the season and then hit the road? It's being rumored (and is probably true) that Larry's parents are the driving force behind this sudden move, but I just don't see how it makes any sense whatsoever. If you're looking to eventually end up in the NBA, wouldn't you want those extra 15 games or so of experience?
As far as the Carolina program is concerned, this royally screws them at the PG position. Yes, Marshall will now play 30+ minutes, but there is absolutely no back-up PG. Dexter Strickland, while great in the open court, is NOT a floor general. He's going to be forced to play PG when Marshall sits, and that's gonna turn into one giant turnover. That's not even the worst part though. There is no PG coming in with the 2011 class. That means no other PG on the roster until Marcus Paige arrives in 2012. I feel for Larry Drew II because he was under a lot of pressure, and he took a ton of blame for Carolina's struggles. However, the truth is that he just isn't an elite PG. He's a decent college player, but he's not the guy to run Carolina's team. The fact still remains, though, that he and his family just gave a big "F You" to Carolina.
Just when you think things are looking up, this happens. Unreal.

Last 7 californians to play for Roy or K
Duke
Taylor King-Transfer
Jamal Boykin-Transfer
Demarcus Nelson-4 year
UNC
Larry Drew-Transfer
David Wear-Transfer
Travis Wear-Transfer
Alex Stephenson-Transfer
This is off the top of my head, but I think it looks like Californians are struggling with life in the Carolinas.

It was Alex Stepheson, swami. Hopefully Roy cuts Cali out of his recruiting.
By the way, here's what Larry Drew, Sr. had to say tonight.
Give me a freakin break. The entire family is mentally insane.
By the way, here's what Larry Drew, Sr. had to say tonight.
So, the decision was made that if Larry lost the starting PG position, that he would leave immediately? He would leave his teammates, Coach, and program hanging, and just bolt? Yeah, that's tasteful."He made the decision. I did speak to coach Williams. I thought it was important that we do it in a very tasteful manner. We did that."
"This was a decision that was made long before this season even started to be perfectly honest. We'd been contemplating it for a while"
"Sometimes things come to a point where a decision has to be made. It had gotten to that point."
Give me a freakin break. The entire family is mentally insane.

Stephenson left because of a family issue back home, he doesn't deserve to be on that list.
Hey Larry Sr., your son is not HIGH Divison 1 college basketball caliber. That is why you as a family bitched out and took your ball and went home.
I sincerely hope that the only schools that look at Larry Jr. are Div. 2 schools. Because that is where he belongs.

Yeah, definitely. Alex's situation was very understandable, and he's still very highly regarded among the Carolina fan base.
I thought the stunt that the Wears pulled was pretty low. Little did I know that LDII would top that.
I just can't believe he left in the middle of the freakin season. He and his family had to think, "How can I hurt Carolina the most?" when making this decision.

He couldn't guard. It was a pretty simple decision.to playing a combined 40 minutes, the duration of a single game, over the season's last eight contests.

Stay out of California, Roy. You had a legacy point guard five hours away in the '11 class that would be worthy of at least 10-15 minutes next year and you didn't give him the time of day. There's plenty of talent on the East Coast and the Southeast. When he was at Kansas recruiting California made sense, but it doesn't at UNC.

I was actually trying to find an article that described the issues at home, but couldn't find one.
