Super jealous every single time i read this thread.

Folks in New Zealand seem to have only recently realized that there is more to life than wine, though, admittedly, they do have some of the best wine in the world. I got spoiled living in Michigan and Ohio, miss the selection! Michigan in general, and Ann Arbor specifically, was heaven in terms of the quality and availability of fine beers. There are a few nice brewers here in NZ, but obviously not the same. And, not a ton gets imported, and the stuff that does is very, very expensive.

In conclusion, screw you guys.

Steinlager isn't that bad of a beer. I've had it here in the states. You don't get many Aussie Craft Brews there ???

Had a Green Flash West Coast IPA this weekend and a Dogfish Head Midas Touch. The West Coast was very citrus-y, the grapefruit really comes through on that one. The Midas Touch was halfway between a wine and a beer. Not my favorite but I'd have it again.

Also had a new Lagunitas offering, their GnarlyWine:



Would DEFINITELY have this one again.

It was a little bit aggressive with the hops for me. Although I did really like the citrus/grapefruit notes in it. Think it's be a little bit better if it was just slightly less bitter.

Did you have a bottle or draft?

so what does it cost total to get the winking lizard jacket?? 100 beers at an average price of 5-6 bucks? more? man that is an expensive "prize". but im jealous

Just realized this was a beer discussion thread and not about the cheap walgreen's beer. I missed out.

Cbus... there was an episode on Brewmaster's where the guy from dogfish head went the NZ for a brew festival and brewed with a local microbrewer there. You should check it out.

Bell's and New Holland are my two favorite breweries overall.

I prefer a lager, pilsner or stout with good drinkability I can drink all night.

Certain ones I can like most oatmeal stouts, I can put down the 6 pack if I wanted. Blackout stout is good, but I can only drink 1. I also like a lot of ale's, I guess if it has good drinkability I will like it.

Gotcha. I'm partial to Russian Imperials, myself. Just had an Old Rasputin a couple nights ago. Went to bed with a warm, full stomach.

That is a probably my favorite RI i've had. Haven't delved into that variety as much as I should have though.

Try the Avery Czar. The alc. % is a bit high, so go easy (it's over 11%). Richest Russian Imperial I've ever had.

And the price is comparable to OR.

If you can get your hands on it, try Surly Darkness. Unfortunately Surly pulled back their distribution area to only the Twin Cities, but if you're up there, grab some. Very, very worth it.

My dad makes regular trips there, though he's about as into beer as Billy Sunday was, so I probably can't get him to bring any back ...

it is pricy. i'd say the average beer is 5 bucks with the majority of the beers ranging from 4 - 6. It is expensive, but isn't terrible when you stretch it out over an entire year. It's about a 6-700 dollar jacket, lol, but its a good experience too.

Had Surly Furious last time I was in the twin cities. Thought their cans, types of brew and marketing were pretty unique for a smaller brewer.

Solid stuff from a small brewery. They are fixing to build a new $20 million brewery/restaurant as well (which hopefully would expand distribution again), but Minnesota law is tricky about it.

I really try not to think about it like that, lol. Plus you figure in dinner or lunch as well on most trips and it increases the "price" that fantastic jacket/pullover/vest/etc. We have had a great time doing it the last few years.

Go to the Rogue River Brewing Company in Newport, Oregon.

They have a dartboard in the tasting room with the 30-35 different beers they're making at any given time- just throw a dart. You get three darts - and three 6 oz sample of whatever beer your darts land upon.

I've only been disappointed once. :)
