You guys should live near a good Acme (the one here on Market Street in Akron is a good one). You can buy a 2-liter of Baltika for $2. It's a Russian lager. Not amazing, but on quality par with Budweiser or Miller.

Eh, I was putting them a step above Natty, Busch, etc.

Baltika "Extra Lager" is basically barely above piss, but if you're going to drink that stuff anyway, might as well get it cheap instead of settling for the ACTUAL piss.

I'll be back home in Florida on Sunday and from what I have read the Walgreens down there sell this cheap brew. I'll buy some just to try it, we'll see.

Some Buehlers, Aldis, and most full-sized Giant Eagles sell some of the Ommegang (the Three Philosophers Ale and their Dubbel Abbey Ale are particuarly common). Comes in a bomber with a cork a lot like a champagne bottle. Any of the stouts from Founders are good, along with their double IPA (called Double Trouble, it's an IPA with a citrus hint ... if you like IPAs and you like Blue Moon, it's a good combo).

If you're into nice, rich, full beers, another that is featured at several of the places mentioned is called Old Rasputin. It's a Russian Imperial Stout. Price isn't too bad. About $9 for a 4-pack.

Oh, with the Ommegang, don't be shocked to pay $8 to $10 for a bomber (big bottle).

One more interesting microbrewery is New Holland. They're out of Holland, MI. My favorite of theirs is an ale called Dragon's Milk (sick name, I know, but it's nice). I'm having one now, actually.

If you're feeling particularly daring, try drinking the beer out of a snifter or a wine glass. You get more oxidation right before you drink it, and it affects the taste.

This is sage advice as well. St. Bernardus is a good brewery, like Ommegang, Founders, and New Holland.

In college I'd get Miller High Life (sold warm) at Walgreens (in Indiana) for $9.90 a 30 pack, which I still think is a hell of a deal.

St. Bernardus ABT 12 is wonderful if you have the taste for it. I Wear Pants, have you had Trappist Rochefort 10? Highly recommend it if you like ABT 12. Some good advise given by O-Trap, and I'll add some popular breweries/beers worth checking out.

Sierra Nevada - their Pale Ale sets the bar for other pale ales out there, also try Bigfoot, Torpedo and Celebration Ale
Stone - Pretty much anything; make some beers that will kick your ass but taste amazing
Dogfish Head - 60min IPA, 90min IPA, Indian Brown Ale
Lagunitas - Lil Sumpin Sumpin, Hop Stoopid, Old GnarlyWine
Bells - Two Hearted, Hopslam, Kalamazoo Stout
Chimay
Trappist Rochefort
And if you're feeling a bit risky try out some sours. If you can find Jolly Pumpkin start out there, and if you're lucky enough to get your hands on any bottle of Cantillon, grab it. Really the best thing to do is find a place that has a good selection and try anything that looks interesting and go from there. Try something different every time and you will start to figure out what styles and breweries you really like.

Hoppin Frog - BORIS the Crusher

Had the pleasure of tasting some Flossmoor Station IPA the other day, that was pretty good. Since moving to Chicago I've been impressed with Goose Island's better offerings, like Matilda, Dominique, Sofie and Fleur. Also have become impressed with Three Floyd's stuff as well.

I'm gonna miss going to the American Craft Beer Fest this year though ... what a great thing to live near when I was in Boston. At least I can go visit my mom in Wisconsin who lives about 30 minutes from New Glarus Brewery

Actually, no. I rarely look at beer online. I just have a few good friends who are all into beer with me, so we are always trying new things and bringing them to each others' houses if they're good.

No I haven't tried Trappist Rochefort 10. I'll have to the next time I'm picking up some good beers. I'm gonna go ahead and assume they have it at Vintage Estates in Boardman.

Very cool. I like a cigar with a beer every now and then when I'm offered by someone, but I don't know jack about them. For Christmas I went into a cigar shop to buy some as a gift and felt like biggest dumbass trying to get help. By the way your posts inspired me to run out and grab a couple bottles of Three Philosophers since I'm not working today. Going to put one on the shelf and have one tonight back to back with Rochefort 10; should have a nice buzz to say the least.
