I went to OSU and received a degree from the department of Computer and Information Science. My actual diploma say "Bachelors Degree in Math and Physical Science". I'm a programmer now and getting ready to apply for another programming job. Which one should I put on my resume? Obviously Computer and Information Science sounds much better, but I don't want to get fired later for putting the wrong degree on my resume.

Put Computer and Information Sciences. That isn't lying, the company knows what you are trying to do.

Now don't put down "Finance" or some other crap, because they will definitely know you are full of shit.

Put what it says on your degree....this is for the background check only. I had a problem once because I put down that my Master's Degree was in Management, instead of Sports Management...it took some douchebag doing the background check like an extra 3 weeks to get the thing done, and I had to go to the University and get an official copy of my transcript and diploma in order to satisfy them. You don't want the headache. Whatever company you are applying to will know what's going on.

Whats on the Degree. Tell them in the interview what you majored in, and explain that the diploma isnt quite as specific as you'd like but didnt want to lie on the resume...

They'll get it. Majors fall under pretty broad terms a lot of the time. Bachelors in Business Administration for example could be just that a BA in Business Administration. But it could be a Marketing degree or many other things.

Put what's on the degree because it isn't going to hurt.

That's not a bad idea, but it doesn't say anything about the department of computer and information science. I was in arts and sciences instead of engineering and I'm not even sure they still have that program anymore.

If you're still in Columbus, and looking for jobs, check out OCLC. Great place to work. I worked there for about 2 years after graduate school.

What's on the diploma...After the first job, they care more about the experience unless you're trying to change careers.

Put what's on the diploma. It's not worth running the risk of appearing dishonest.

Is that a BS or BA?

I'd put BS/BA in Bachelors Degree in Math and Physical Science
Concentration: Computer and Information Science

Or something like that. I wouldn't blatantly lie. You're previous experience should be enough.

It's a BS. They used to offer a BS and a BA through Arts and Sciences as well as the Engineering school's Computer Science degree. I was in the same CIS classes as the engineers without having to take all the other engineering classes. (For example, while all my pals were struggling with physics 131/132/133 I was enjoying 110/111/112.) I'm not sure if they offer that anymore though.

You can find samples online, and I'm sure OC members would help out. It generally isn't too tough to put one together.
