I dunno... if they have something that is like "appropriate attire" they could say that he violated that rule. I think it's kinda bogus, but I'm a Packer Backer :)

Also, if he has worn the tie before, they have no case. Because then they can't say it was inappropriate.

I think it was justified

1) The dealership donates $20,000 a month to the bears organization for a sponsorship so they obviously want to connect themselves with them.

2) This guy is not stuffed in some cubicle working on some excel spreadsheet all day. He is a direct representation of the company and wearing that tie is only going to cause trouble. I know it's stupid to get pissed at somebody for wearing other teams apparel, but why even put yourself in that situation? If you wanted to show your respect to your grandmother then wear some packers boxers or an undershirt.

3) The guy was told MULTIPLE times to take it off and he refused. The boss pretty much gave him an ultimatum of wearing the tie or losing his job and he took the later.

Heard the guy interviewed today on the radio. His mother passed last week and they buried her Friday. He said it was in honor of her who was a lifelong fan. Sounds like a little spin after the fact to me but that's his story.

He didn't get fired for wearing the neck tie IMO, he got fired for disobeying/defying/disrespecting his superior. Sir Yes Sir is what you say when your boss requests something regarding your attire.

This, it'd be different if they simply fired him without asking to take it off. But if they viewed it as against company policy or bad for their image and wanted him to take it off then he definitely should have done so.

He's got another gig already so it doesn't look like he'll be filing charges or anything, but if he's stupid enough not to conform then we'll likely just have to wait and see.

From a legal perspective, you're incorrect. Unless one is working under a bona fide employment contract, the concept of at-will employment applies. The employer can fire the employee for any reason not specifically prohibited by law (race, religion, etc., etc.).

From a human perspective, it was a bitch move by the dealership to make a big deal out of a tie, and a bonehead move by the sales weasel to choose to die on that particular hill.

I could see a lawsuit coming out of this, but at the same time, he didn't really get fired for wearing the tie, he got fired for insubordination.

At first glance of this I thought what a crock ,but After hearing the story I understand better ... It is a Chicago dealorship they are a Bears sponsor maybe a few Bears are on some commercials .. dont know .. In any case because its sales, It is detrimental to the business being it is a Chicago dealorship .. You cant wear that stuff .. Its like delivering pizza for Dominos in a pizza hut uniform ... Its like workinf at Pepsi and drinking Coke for lunch .. Its disrespectful ... I do think he should have been sent home perhaps .. It sounded like it was a rash .... I do think the guy wearing the tie did this to start something ... He is a knucklehead any way you look at it ... He is getting his 15 minutes....... If I went to a Pittsburgh dealorship the day after the Browns beat us in a playoff game and some joker was wearing a Browns tie .. guess what I am imidiatly walking out and going down the street to the other place

As is always the case...he did not get fired for wearing the Packer tie.

he got fired because he refused to take it off when he was asked by management.

There is a difference.

I can understand why they wouldn't want him wearing it, but to fire him seems like overkill. Especially since they have received a lot of backlash/negative attention. It would have been much easier just to tell him to go home for the rest of the day

While I don't know the situation I would guess this guy is the office douche that nobody liked anyways. I don't imagine the guy would just do something controversial like this out of the blue one time and get fired like that.
