My Aunt got a new computer and is looking for office, mainly excel to install on it. Are there any places to get an older version cheaper? She doesn't want to pay for the new version if she doesn't have to.

Been looking for the same type of thing.

I want to get an older version of Outlook without having to drop any coin on it.

If you know anyone who goes to college you can get it for like 49 bucks. Just type in student office discount in google. Or you can use openoffice. It is free and it really is not that bad.

Through my college I can get office 2010 or 2007 for like $9. We only get so many licenses though.

I had OpenOffice for a few months and had a few compatibility issues. When I opened Word documents, sometimes the alignment was off. Usually not a big deal, but with doing papers for school, it was a hassle.

From word to Open office there will be issues but from open office to Office there are none.

Does your Aunt work for a company that participates in Microsoft's Home Use Program? You can get Office 2010 for $10 through it.

I've had really good experience with open office as well, but I rarely share documents. I think it depends on what you're looking to use it for.

I have OpenOffice on my new laptop with Windows 7 instead of using the Microsoft Office "starter" that came with the laptop.

False.

To a general everyday user this maybe true, to anyone to REALLY uses the macro programming or some more intricate excel functions, this is not true at all.

Agreed. I use OpenOffice on my new laptop, but when I need more intensive things done, I go to my desktop with a fully-functioning Microsoft Office 2007.

You can try EBAY, but if she is running Vista or Win7 you will have compatibility issues with Outlook on anything earlier than Office 2007, but Excel and Word should work fine.

OpenOffice just feels...shitty.

I don't know. I just don't trust it if I'm writing an 8 page paper.

I agree. I have used NeoOffice (mac) which is a version of OpenOffice but much better. I have since acquired the newest version of Office and it is great.

OpenOffice is fine for basics. If you're a non-mathematical major college student, it would suffice. All depends on what you need.

Mathematics, engineering, heck even any serious business major like finance would need the "real" excel.

Yeah. By "non-mathematical," I meant a major not needing anything mathematical. English or Communications ... that sort of thing.
