SOS or BOP

SOS (Shit on a Shingle)
vs
BOP (Beef on Potatoes)

The standard term (both from my mom and the military) SOS is basically.. chip beef and cream gravy (flour, milk and butter mixture) on toast.
Standard in the Belly home…. as a kid and even now..

Another standard in the Belly home growing up and now is BOP is basically (fried ground beef, can of mushroom soup added, stirred and poured over mash potatoes) quick and easy..
This was a standard food in the City Projects for our family and Prison (Bureau of Prison) also served up this wonderful dish. (Juvenile detention)

I think some people get those two dishes mixed up or have never been poor… :D

Which one is your favorite?

Growing up we always called SOS, cream chipped beef on toast. Good stuff but I haven't had it in forever.

Another great food from my childhood is scrapple. Yes, I spent many years of my childhood in Pennsylvania. Nothing says good "poor" breakfast like pork scraps mashed together with cornmeal and flour, then fried.

Are we brothers? Scrapple was not only a breakfast main stay but many times dinner.
Scrapple, lime beans and rice w/ the grease from the Scrapple over it.

I know I never want to eat Scrapple ever again... I could live without it

We used to have SOS once in a while as kids. I never ate it but everyone else liked it. My mom still makes it occasionally. We don't have beef on potatoes but my brother and sister in law make a dish they call Beef Hot Spots. They cook a beef roast over an onion all day and then shred it over white bread, mashed taters and gravy. I had some when I visited Arizona last and it was actually pretty good. The beef was awesome.

Didn't have either of those dishes, but left over mashed potatoes were always potato pancakes the next night!

I love SOS, but never had BOP. Another thing I like for breakfast is Goetta.

SOS is a staple here at the Chateau Du Cat Food. It's also a favorite treatment for leftover beef roasts or corned beef.

One change - in deference to my Kentucky-bred wife, we serve it over biscuits. :)

Grew up eating a lot of SOS. I still enjoy it. In fact my wife just made some last weekend for breakfast. She also serves it over biscuits

As a kid we also used to eat another inexpensive meal I have not seen mentioned. We called it "Maid's Day Out". To make it you fry some ground beef, mix in a can of Veg-All and serve it over crispy Chow Mein noodles.
