He'll set-up this year then move into closer role then Mo retires, I'm guessing. But, let's see if he can cut it in the big city.

Don't really care one way or the other but long story short that's what Keith Law thought of the deal.
Edit: I do care. Just saw on ESPN this deal now gives the Rays 11 of the first 65 picks in this coming draft which is supposed to be pretty strong.

Soriano is nasty. But hes pitched in Atlanta and TB. 2 of the 3 cities that dont even sell out their playoff games. We will see what he does in NYC.

If I am a Rays fan, I am ecstatic with this move. Closers are a dime a dozen and they just got a free 1st rounder out of the deal.

- 1st rounder will be a bust
- 1st rounder will become all star/ super star material, only for the rays to trade him to the yankees for another 1st rounder.

I'm pumped. Like I posted this gives the Rays 11 picks out of the first 65. Sure our players that we have signed as free agents get traded/sign elsewhere eventually. But home grown talent is different. Longoria is signed till 2018 and Carl Crawford was with us for 11 years. We traded Garza but never signed him to an extension and just offered arbitration last year. Despite all the young talent they are very selective who they offer extensions to.

Closers are simply relief pitchers who pitch the 9th inning and get 3 guys out. Any above average relief pitcher can become a closer, accumulate "saves" and then automatically get a ridiculous raise.
Great closers exist (Rivera comes to mind) but IMO you should never drop lots of money on a closer. They are far too easy to replace.

If you are the Indians or the Pirates, then yeah it will probably be a bust. But the Rays certainly know what they are doing. They have a fine track record, and if you read the post under yours, you can see that they do lock up their great players. They had Crawford for 11 seasons.
I just love how Garza went from being the 3rd pitcher on the Rays to becoming "Cy Young" because the Cubs panicked and threw a Godfather offer at the Rays. The Cubs were seeing the Brewers get instantly better with all the moves they made, and the Reds were coming off a playoff appearance. They had to do "something" and something meant that they needed to wildly overpay for Garza

Crawford got a huge contract from the Red Sox. Even if the Rays had that kind of dough, I doubt they would have matched it. Crawford is a nice player but not worth that $$$. Desmond Jennings will be more than capable of doing the sorts of things that Crawford excelled at.

I dont think the Tribe or the Pirates should be mentioned in the same sentence. Wasnt too long ago when the Tribe had the best farm team in the majors

Say what you want about the Indians success over the past couple of years, but one thing you cannot argue is their lack of skill in drafting baseball players. They haven't "drafted" a great player in some time.

Tribe drafting has sucked since the 90s. BUT they still beat the pirates since they can find talent in the MLB system. They just suck at finding talent at the HS/College level lol.

Completely agree. Same with Garza being traded, Helickson is a power pitcher with more composure. I love Garza's ability but his emotion can get in the way. Edwin Jackson and Scott Kazmir haven't had the same success as they did with the Rays so I am pretty confident in their ability to know when to sell high.
