My reaction is that this:

Student Senate member Sean Martin says students in dating relationships who try to live together under the new housing option will be "frowned upon.""

is hilarious.

If you let two people with different genders live together, you have to let all people with different genders live together. I take it OU has a non-discrimination policy. I don't know how they could maintain the preferable treatment under it.

I think this is absurd. Miami (OH) is (or has) also looked into the coed housing option.

This just opens up a whole new can of worms.

But then again, when you have dorms that have female halls, male halls, female halls, and male halls stacked like that in a building, it's not that far off. But now, accepting the fact that you'll put them in the same room is just asking for trouble.

It's not like OU is really out for being conservative though. They'll get the crowd that they are marketing themselves to -- if that's what they are trying to do, it sure seems like it.

When I went to OSU they had coed halls. I don't really think it's that big of a differencea as long as everyone in the room is ok with it.

When my wife was in college they stuck a guy in her apt and she wasn't too happy about it. (mainly because he was a big slob, always invited friends over too late and smoked pot every night.)

edit - as a parent I would HATE the idea of sending my daughter off to live in the same drom/apt as a guy. That would be a deal breaker for me.

I would not pay for any of my kids to be in a dorm with someone of the opposite sex.

If both parties are fine with the arrangement I see no problem. There would obviously have to be an opt out for students who were not okay with it. I lived on a co-ed floor in college. The rooms went guy, girl, guy, girl all the way down the hall. I don't think it caused anyone to bang out more. Most people brought people that didn't live in our wing back to their rooms rather than the guys or girls that lived next door.

WHat did Costanza say in the ep where his gf had a male roommate? 'the hardest thing is getting the woman to come back to your place. he already has that'

More drunken sex possibly?

Who knows...

Honestly, I cant see much good from it, and a lot of bad. What happens when the first rape allegation is made? When the first fight occurs? etc, etc, etc.

Now, same halls is fine with me. Some IU dorms had co-ed halls, and if you started a relationship, the girl just moved in anyway. But they are asking for trouble with putting kids together off the bat imo.

At my undergrad (Rice), we were fully co-ed by suite, so I was in a suite with 4 guys, right next to a suite of 4 girls. On our floor, we were roughly split 50/50. There were at least a handful of suites that were co-ed within the suite, but that was generally two gay guys who wanted to share a suite with two girls. I can't imagine most girls wanting to room with a guy or vice-versa, for all sorts of reasons.

I didn't think it was particularly strange, and I didn't see any big issue with it. The idea that drunken hookups won't happen in college if floors/dorms are segregated by sex but will happen if they're co-ed is kind of silly.

In my time at undergrad, I didn't know of any rape allegation or problem that came from being co-ed by suites or rooms. I don't get the uproar here.

The DDN had an article about this not too long ago -- apparently Miami was experimenting with it. Some girls swear by it because it eliminates that girl drama of living together. My sister moved into OSU this past Fall into a suite with 3-4 other girls and she's already had a couple different girls move in/out because of drama. Blah blah blah. But I could see both sides of the argument. Why mess with a fine system of same-sex rooming. There's definitely potential for trouble.

If I lived with a semi-attractive girl who was cool and fine, then no problems, I could do it. But my luck I'd be stuck with some weirdo who watched Twilight every night and the room would be purple with glitter and christmas lights coming out of everywhere. Or worse, a black girl. Call me racist, but black girls are fucking annoying.

people already do this, at least on my campus. If you have a guy/girl as a roommate in a relationship you can pretty much count on having a 3rd roommate

I'll tell you what will happen. The first time a girl is raped by her "roommate", her parents are going to sue the school for a shit ton of money and this program will be going bye bye.

That happens, and it usually pisses the third party off. Co-ed floors and suites are one thing - most colleges have them, but access to a particular room is another thing. I can't imagine a parent wanting their daughter to be in a room with a guy that wants to room with a girl (for whatever reasons).

Its not really any different than what I had my freshman year. I had girls across the hall from me. There were no co-ed rooms but I had to walk literally 5 feet and be in a girls room.

That being said, I am jealous. I want someone to clean up my shit for me.

Those who say it's no different than having male/female rooms next to each other are fooling themselves. Are these roommates supposed to change in front of one another? What about privacy? You think if some girl is rooming with a guy, that girl's bf is going to be okay with that? Same thing for the guy's gf. This is a terrible idea. Some things just aren't meant to be co-ed.

What is OU going to do about the showers and bathrooms for these students? Some of the dorms at OU the bathrooms are shared between a certain hallway such as south green mods. Are the guys/girls going to be sharing bathrooms now, how will they work all this stuff out?

If this truly came about because of transgendered students, then OU should make a transgendered dorm. No need to go to all this trouble and invite all the trouble this idea will cause.

Students living in these dorms actually want to, right? That is, OU just can't make whomever live in them -- they actually have to be comfortable with it? I'm assuming that's the case. If so, why would a girl who has a boyfriend volunteer to live with another guy? OU probably isn't going to let just anyone live in these rooms and wait for the timebomb to go off.

it's awkward enough living with a member of the same sex in the room with you let alone a member of the opposite sex. this is going to end badly

FYI, OU student here, these will not be random selections like the regular housing is done. You will have to request to live with that person (and they with you obviously,) and they will be in certain halls on South Green.
