My fiances sister has been dating this guy in the Navy for about 5 months now and something just doesn't seem right. I was in the Marines so I know a little bit about the Navy but I would like to clear some things up.

Thanks.

Former Navy myself if you like to ask anything? Been out since 98 though so I'm sure alot has changed. I know there are some activity duty Navy members on the board currently.

Has he been trying to be a SEAL for 3 years? My sister-in-laws sister got knocked up and knocked out by one of those guys. I've tried to explain that you either are a SEAL or aren't you don't try for 3 years.

It is my understanding that most SEAL's have tried more than once to make the grade. It's not unusual to fail a few times.

After three years of "trying" and failing, its safe to say he will never be one.

Most SEALS come in under a contract for that before they even go to bootcamp now. It is alot different than it used ot be. You can try once you are already in, but it is harder to get excepted. I have never heard of someone trying for three years though. After a while, the would urge you to go SWCC, EOD, Diver, or AIRR. I think I might have ot throw the bullshit flag on this one.

Having met a few SEALs and read some books...the guy doesn't have "it", I have been calling bullshit on him since I heard his story.

Of course brutus knows more than I would, but my brother was in the Teams for 5 years I think. I think his graduating class had as many rollbacks as they did guys who actually went through the whole thing in one shot. 168 started pre-BUD/s and around 20 of them actually graduated the BUD/s training the first time though with him and his class had around 40 or so if I remember right. Went to his graduation in Coronado for it...was pretty coool.

The demeanor of Team guys.....well......i thought going in they would be some muscle bound idiots and such, but pretty much all the ones I met were very down to earth and great guys. Now, they could go out and party something fierce that is for sure and get nuts!

As for a guy trying to do it for three years....i guess it is possible...but what does he mean by "trying"? That is what I would want to know.
On discovery channel they followed class 234 in the BUD/s (basic underwater demolition/SEAL ) training. One of the guys I think was on his 3rd try he said in an interview.

They say there are more fake SEALs than actual Team guys.....and I imagine Navy has alot of guys who are saying they are 'trying' to be a SEAL, just like I noticed in the Army alot of guys say the want and are 'trying' to get into the various Special Forces. I do know this.....the ones that I know do not advertise what they do..and when my brother was training and wanting to be in the Teams he really did not tell anyone what his aspirations were.

I would say in this case........if it looks like a fake, acts like a fake and smells like a fake...it probably is a fake.

The first thing that drew my attention, was the fact that he kept telling everyone he was trying to be a SEAL. Like thavoice said, most SEALs don't go around bragging about it. This guy is most likely using it as a pickup line and it must've worked.

Exactly. Also, those who are really interested in it know that it is very, very difficult and the attritioin rate is so high that it is very unlikely you will make it through. Because of that, many dont wanna publicize it alot because when they dont make it, and statistically they are alot more l ikely to NOT make it, it makes it more embarrassing.

What's his name I can look him up. Also people do brag. We had a guy on my ship that was the fastest military swimmer period and he talked about it all the time. He also just got kicked out for drugs.

It is possible. He could have done an IA tour over there, but I would cast my doubts.

Sidenote...can you explain the IA to me? My uncle who is a Major and pilots and F-18 in the Marines just had this IA thing and he now has to serve a year on the ground in Afghanistan...seems foolish to spend all that money training him to fly only to put him on the ground. What is an IA?

IA means idividual augmentee; it's when the army doesn't have someone to fill a spot, and another branch steps in to help out. Not all IA's are in the middle east, I know a guy that is IA to Tampa.
