From the Findlay Courier...

Friday night’s Findlay High School hockey game at The Cube did nothing to help U.S.-Canadian relations.

After a period or so of unsportsmanlike play on the ice, the game was stopped with 4:30 remaining in the contest by the officials allowing St. Thomas of Villanova to skate away with a 2-0 non-conference win over the Trojans.

Because of the pushing, hard hits and chippy banter between the two teams, the officials decided to call the game rather than risk escalating the tensions between the two teams.

“I’ve been around hockey a very long time and I never saw an ending of a game like this,” said Findlay High School hockey coach Dan St.-Jean, whose team beat St. Thomas earlier this season. “I wasn’t happy, it really bothered me,”

“We didn’t come out and play Trojan hockey. We didn’t have the intensity and discipline we needed. When we play hockey like we can, we’re a very good team.”

The Findlay Police Department was also dispatched to the scene to make sure order was kept. But, after a lengthy discussion between the coaches, a pre-planned meal between the two teams went on as scheduled.

“A lot of stuff that happened, a lot of crazyness, We talked to the team captains and had a pow wow and everyone had dinner together like we had planned,” St.-Jean said. “They didn’t shake hands on the ice but they shook hands after they ate in the dining room and that says a lot about the kids.

“Even though things got a little rowdy, you have to learn move on."

I really think that's a dumb reason to just basically suspend a game... I mean, unless an all out brawl occured I do'nt see the big deal w/ hard checking, pushing and shoving

Since no one was actually at the game, it's awfully tough to say what actually prompted this. Having worked a few years at a rink and been around hockey played by people in every age group from 4 to 70, there certainly have been times where it's been justified to call off a game.
