That's because it costs no money to offer cross country and you don't need a full roster of kids to play it.

Number 1: Track and field is the highest because it can have the largest roster (or participation numbers) than any other high school sport. Plus if there is one gender team, odds are there is another. Whereas, other sports do not have that same luxury. Not all schools who have a boy's soccer team have a girl's soccer team. Just like not every school who has a boy's soccer team has a girl's soccer team.

Number 2: Just because T&F has more participants, does not mean they are all runners. There are thousands of kids in T&F and they barely run. Throwers aren't runners. I wouldn't necessarily think that pole vaulters, long jumpers, and high jumpers are classified as "runners" either.

Number 3: You mention T&F, but not XC? Everyone else has mentioned XC, but you give numbers for T&F. That has nothing to do with the soccer/XC debate.

I don't care, you're arguing that cross country is somehow more popular or something than soccer. Which is simply not true. You know it, I know it, everyone knows it. I like cross country, it's a good sport. But it isn't more popular than soccer.

So for a cross country team you need 5 people and well that's it.

Soccer team you need at least 11 people, field, equipment, etc. The expenses involved are much higher so it stands to reason that there'd be less of them.

But tell me, how many people go to professional cross country meets?
