So they'll misconstrue any horrible incident that occurs anywhere in the world on that day to mark the start of the end. Convenient for them, I'm sure the start could last days, weeks, months, years, or decades!!convinced by their reading of the Bible that the end of the world will begin on May 21, 2011.

You know, I was raised in a very religious home and while I'm not sure I believe the Bible, I know it very well.
The Bible states that the rapture will come "like a thief in the night," when people least expect it. So does Marie Exley think she outsmarted God? I don't understand how people can be so ignorant....and that comment's not for believing in God, that's for trying to predict the end of the world.

This web site serves as an introduction and portal to four faithful ministries which are teaching that WE CAN KNOW from the Bible alone that the date of the rapture of believers will take place on May 21, 2011 and that God will destroy this world on October 21, 2011.
They also use the bible...SnotBubbles;622796 wrote:You know, I was raised in a very religious home and while I'm not sure I believe the Bible, I know it very well.

Teachers have always used these verses as proof that people will be caught off-guard by Christ's coming. It is true that these verses are teaching that, but verses 4 and 5 instruct us that there is more to the story:
4
"But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief."
Here we discover that there are some people who will not be caught off-guard by Christ's second coming. We have all been taught time and time again that Christ's coming will be like a thief in the night, but here we have a clear statement (at least, it's clear to us now) that it will not come as thief for the children of the light.
5
"Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness."

“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father." (NIV)
THAT seems pretty clear, don't you think? "No one" typically means "no one."
The crux of their entire defense hangs basically on the notion that Noah "knew" when the flood was coming, but that's not even true. Noah knew to be ready for the flood. He was commanded to diligently be ready, and he was, but he didn't know when it was coming.
In the same way, believers today are told to "be ready." It doesn't mean they are told they can "know."
Interestingly, I can't find a defense for the actual dates they list (May 22, 2011 for the Rapture and October 21, 2011 for earth's destruction).

If that's true, these ones are the asshole of the body.

Really? My birthday is May 25th, this better not interfere with any of my party plans! Stupid prophecy isn't going to ruin my birthday party!
Haven't we gone through this about 30 times in history already? Every time its wrong and the cult ends up drinking the Berrysaurus-Rex and catching a comet to the promised lands or something along those lines?

No, they won't be able to do that. People who believe in the Rapture are very clear that it is a single event that will happen at once where all believers are raptured (or taken up) into Heaven. That singular event starts the end of days in their interpretation of scripture. This is too be followed by seven years of tribulation (Anti-Christ, mark of the beast, etc.), then the world will be destroyed, Satan will be thrown into a bottomless pit, and God will create a New Jerusalem that will last for 1000 years. Unless all Christians are raptured on May 21 this year, there's no way they can backpedal on this.

Does "bottomless pit" = black hole? That would be so cool!

That's a horrible misinterpretation of that passage. Both sides take this out of context, but they take it more out of context. Here is the entire passage:
1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 (NIV)1 Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 While people are saying, “eace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. 4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. 5 You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
It is very clear that Paul is not telling them that they will know when Christ is returning, but rather that they will not be caught off guard because they will be prepared simply because they know that he is retuning. For instance, you know that a friend is coming over for a visit so you get the house ready, but you don't know the exact moment they will knock on your door. When they do knock on your door however you aren't shocked to see them because you knew they were coming. The same is true with the return of Christ. We know that he is coming back, so we prepare for it. We don't however know exact date of his return. But when he does return, those who believe will not be caught off guard because we knew he was coming and prepared for it.

Indeed. Preparedness does not equal knowledge.
In football, a defense can be "ready" for a Tiger Go pass without knowing when it's coming. Same diff.

Any attempt at predicting the end of the world is comical to me. The Apostles all thought that the return of Christ and the end of the world would come in their lifetime because Jesus told them that he would be returning soon, so they assumed that he meant before their death. Since then some pocket of every generation has believed that they would be the last generation and they Christ would return in their lifetime because of their interpretation of the signs of the end of the age foretold in the Bible. However, the Bible is very clear that we will not know it is going to happen. Christ himself made this very clear. He also made it clear that believers should be ever-ready for his return, so that they are not caught off guard when it happens.
The primary texts about the end of the world in the Bible come from the book of Daniel, the Gospels (Matthew, Make, Luke, and John), and Revelation. Christ spent a good deal of time talking about his return, the end of the world, and how to be ready right before he was crucified. He talked about the end of the world and the signs that would precede it, then he warned to be ready because the day and hour are unknown.
He then continues to warn about being ready so that when his return happens you will not be caught off guard and be left (all of this can be found in Matthew 24-25).
I think that trying to interpret the signs of the end that are talked about in scripture is comical because these things have been happening for thousands of years. The "end times" are essentially the period of time leading up to the return of Christ and the end of the world. The period began 2000 years ago when Christ ascended into Heaven. Since we have been waiting for his return ever since we have been living in the end times. The entire period of history beginning after his ascension is the end times, because it is the period of waiting for his return. This is why it's ridiculous to try and predict when the end times will start or when his return will happen based on the signs because we are essentially already living in the end times, and the signs have been happening continuously for 2000 years. I think that these people are foolish and they give mainstream Christianity a bad name.

That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left. 42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.
He then continues to warn about being ready so that when his return happens you will not be caught off guard and be left (all of this can be found in Matthew 24-25).
