My girlfriend and I have reservations at Mitchells tomorrow night. After dinner we are going to stop by a New Years party at the Hilton. The invitation to the party says to dress "business casual". What do you guys consider "business casual"?

Not a suit, and no jeans.

At the very minimal, khakis and a polo (although khakis at this time of year is arguably quite tacky).

Dress pants and a buttoned long-sleeve shirt, in my amateur opinion.

I consider business casual attire bullshit.

But yeah, dress pants and a long sleeve button down. Or you could wear khakis and a short sleeve button down and everyone will think you're 12.

Khakis are fine in the summer, between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

The real test is to NEVER wear cargo pants. People who do that should be locked in a Walmart and lit on fire.

An argyle v-neck and a pair of jeans are what I wear when I dress "nicely" to go out to dinner. If I have to actually dress up I'll wear dress pants and a button down or stick with the sweater. I absolutely hate dressing up, though.

Ties aren't required for "business casual." As others have said, nice polo or button shirt tucked into slacks (not hanging out) and dress shoes, tie is optional.

Dress slacks, or "chinos". If you don't know what chinos, go to Jcrew.com. It's a more updated version of the khaki. They have winter and fall chinos.

Try not to wear a polo...that's just lame. Wear a dress shirt, or a button down shirt. Nice shoes, no tennis shoes.

I'm just going to go with a nice pair of slacks and a button-up long sleeve shirt. I figured I would play it safe.

I have been to dinners and events that called for business casual and I was the only guy not wearing jeans. I guess it depends on the people throwing the party/dinner etc.....

A suit (or sportcoat and appropriate dress pants) might even be acceptable with an open collar buttoned shirt, but absolutely no tie if you do. A coat isn't necessary, though.

That just means that most people weren't smart enough to ask what "business casual" meant. LOL!

Hey, be different and set the tone. Thong, soft tie and flip flops. Suppose to be warm today.

I have been to Mitchell's at Polaris a handful of times and no shit have seen people in there wearing jeans, warmup pants, and t-shirts. I'm not a snob or anything but, C'MON MAN!

Slacks and collared shirt of some type will be more than sufficient.

Yeah, only wear a polo when you're golfing.

Or playing polo.

Everyone has said it, slacks, button down shirt, tie if you want to.

I actually like dressing like that when I go out but maybe it's because I'm young enough that I get treated appreciably better when dressed up.

Not at the office, but you can otherwise get by with designer jeans, a collared shirt, and a sportcoat (yes, dress shoes no tennis shoes). That's the route I'd go if attending a party later. The main point of saying "business casual" in this case is so that people show up put together instead of looking like a bum.
