PITTSBURGH -- Officials from Homeland Security said they have collected more than $130,000 in counterfeit Winter Classic jerseys in Pittsburgh.

The crackdown was led by Homeland Security and the U.S. Postal Service over the past several weeks. Officials from the department said most of the merchandise comes from other countries.

Authentic jerseys costs about $150, but counterfeit jerseys sell for as low as $37.

Homeland Security officers said consumers rarely know that they are smuggling illegal goods into the country when they purchase items from online counterfeiters.

"There are different penalties they can face monetary wise, even just if they're losing out if (the jerseys) are intercepted. They (consumers) don't get it. Counterfeiters won't be giving them their money back," said Homeland Security Officer Joe Klaus.

There used to be a website that sold jerseys for really cheap.

Not just hockey but football, baseball, etc.

Homeland security shut it down about a month ago but I heard from some family members there are others that are about the same.

I've bought some of these "fake" authentics before. Decent stitched quality for fractions of the price, and I've never been screwed over, why not?

As for the knockoff jersey sites, I believe there is one still around that part of the name is a girls name or something. I can't remember so this is really useless information, but I've thought about buying one from there and taking my chances that the quality is passable. For $40 it's worth a shot.

I've bought around 5 jerseys from a site and usually the quality is better than the jerseys that cost $150.

The quality of bootlegs is absolute garbage, to say nothing of the risk that everything will get seized by customs anyway. And if recent chatter is to be believed, it's about to get a lot more serious from a law enforcement standpoint.
