If Seattle who is 6-9 and losers of 3 straight and have been outscored by 107 points this season win against the 7-8 Rams.....they will host a playoff game.
That's great!

The funny part will be all the people calling for a bunch of rule changes over a 40 year aberration. Talk about killing a mosquito with a bazooka.

This is reason #1 why the NFL should immediately institute the BCS system and simply match up the top two teams in the Super Bowl.

There should be rule changes, and it isn't because of this year. It's just as ridiculous that an 11-5 team would have to play on the road against a 9-7 team as it is against a 7-9 team. The teams with the best records should be rewarded with home field.
This will be the 3rd straight season the NFC west champ will benefit from the rule, 12-4 Indy had to play @ 8-8 San Diego (and lost) in the 2008-2009 playoffs, etc.

Qwest Field is one of the toughest stadiums in the NFL to play a road game, at least when the Seahawks are good. Since they're at home against a mediocre Rams team, they may win and get into the playoffs. At that point, the home field advantage won't really matter, because the rest of the playoff teams are all capable of hammering them.

I agree. The top two seeds stay the same and the other four teams are reseeded based on record.

No rule changes. The divisions are setup with 14-of-16 games being in common with divisional opponents. It makes sense to use them as a primary qualification for the playoffs. The Wildcards are simply there as a 'catch all". They're nothing more than a second chance, not a first chance.

A sub-.500 team should never host a playoff game.

I agree with this to qualify, but I think it would be a good move to not let division winners to host so long as they have a worse than .500 average. If they go 8-8 they host, but not below that. They would play at the #5 seed, and #6 seed goes to #4 seed.

Who cares if every team in the division plays the same schedule? The point is that the door is open for losing teams to host games over teams who had a better record. By lucking into a small division that can't beat anyone outside of that division, a crappy team gets in and hosts ahead of six or eight better teams....you know, teams that....win.

The divisions (and winning them) should either mean something, or they should be done away with. It's not the least bit ridiculous that a second place team should go on the road to a division champion, even one with a worse record. Records can be extremely misleading due to differences in schedule strength - the 9-7 division champion could quite possibly be a lot better than a 10-6 or 11-5 wild card.

I guess it's just weird for the 23rd best team out of 32 teams to be controlling their own destiny to host a playoff game....when a top 5 team or two has no chance to host a home game.
The West divisions suck too often.

Or the 1985 Villanova Wildcats, or the 1983 NC ST Wolfpack etc.etc.etc. It's what makes the Playoffs/Tournaments fun and interesting.

Those teams winning made them interesting.
I know most of the county wil be on the edge of their seats for the 34-14 beating by the visiting Saints in the divisional round.

Mr. Bradford, you better show up.
I can deal with an 8-8 team being in the playoffs but will struggle with a 7-9 team making it in

The worst part about this is that a 7-9 team would get a home playoff game while a team with a winning record would have to travel as a wildcard.
Something has to change in terms of how they setup the playoffs.
