I recently received a letter that said there was a "suspicious login" that has the potential to affect all students, faculty, and staff that had, at some point, an email address that ended in osu.edu. According to the letter, there is a possibility that personal information such as SSN's were compromised. OSU also added that they did not think that any information was compromised, but are providing a free year of credit protection through Experion. Did any other alumnus/alumna receive this letter? What do you think?

If the letter didn't have a contact number it is probably a scam. If it had a contact number call it. If it didn't and you are still concerned call alumni relations from the school's website.

I received it and thought it was odd that the return address on the envelope was in Minnesota.

It's legit. I'm a student at Ohio State, and I received an e-mail and letter about this situation. There's a link below about the situation from the OSU website itself.

I thought that was weird also.... Hopefully someone isn't attempting to pull a scam of a legitimate issue!!! The Minnesota address threw me off also.

I checked this. I believe that is where Experian is housed.

I didn't go to OSU but I saw an article about this in the paper. Over 700,000 people's information was possibly compromised.

I got one too, but why did it say you must sell Amway in order to be protected?

I got one too. Which is strange considering that yes I did get into OSU for the summer of 2009. But I never took a class lol. Why am I still in the email list?

because the information in question is compiled not only from current students, but past students, applicants, faculty and some others. thats why the number is in the 700,000's

Makes sense. So if I tried to get onto my account it would let me? Probably a contributing factor to this problem for them.

I don't think you'd be able to if you wanted. I'm pretty sure the accounts expire or are frozen after a certain period of inactivity.

It's legit, only my letter offered a lifetime of protection. I must be on the VIP list.

I work for OSU and we got a heads-up this would be going out to everyone. It's indeed legitimate. From what they told us from work, was that someone logged in, had access to stuff, didn't take anything, and then left.

Mine was sent to my parent's house which I just so happened to be at on the day it arrived, Christmas Eve. Its a good chance its the only permanent address OSU has on file for me.

I got one as well...the strange thing is I went to OSU from 1981-83 and no one ever heard of email back then. I certainly didn't have an OSU email account. I was going to sign up till I got to the part where they wanted to me to put my SS# down, then I thought it was a scam and never signed up for it. How many of you did sign up?

Whether you had an email or not is irrelevant. They got into a database with addresses/SSN's, etc.
