I just had a student tell me that it is really bad for me. I drink A LOT of it (to make up for the alcohol I no longer drink).

What's bad about it? Or why is it bad for you?

It's not bad for you in moderation. A can a day keeps the doctor at bay, or something like that.

This is something I found on a 'diet' website..just someone's comment..so take it for what it's worth..but I've heard this same thing. The main concern with Diet soda and Diet Dew is the Aspartame..which is a sugar substitute I do believe:

"It's nothing to worry about. Aspartame is perfectly fine to drink unless you are allergic to phenylalanine, in which case it can kill you, because it breaks down into aspartic acid and phenylalanine. This is the reason aspartame has a bad rep. People hear about some rare adverse reaction and assume its dangerous. By that logic, peanut butter is deadly and everyone should stay away from it! And of course once something gets a bad rep, rumors and misinformation is spread like crazy."

But then when you research Aspartame...I found this:

"In 1996, an article by J.W. Olney suggesting a link between an increased incidence of brain tumours in the United States and the marketing of aspartame relaunched the debate on the risks to human health posed by its consumption. The debate has been covered by the media, notably on the Internet where several thousand websites are devoted to the effects of aspartame. These contain allegations claiming that this additive is responsible for a large number of adverse effects (more than fifty), some of which are very serious, such as: multiple sclerosis, lupus erythematosus, Gulf War Syndrome, brain tumours, epileptic seizures, complications of diabetes, etc. At the same time, the health authorities in a number of countries have reacted by informing the public on the studies available or underway and on the data based on scientific evidence."

So I'd say it's all up to you..seems like whatever you want to believe in this case.

the main thing is the acid that leads to kidney stones I would think. I'm trying to kick coke and get healthy at the moment. I'm down to 1 can a day from 3 or 4. It sucks and I couldn't do it overnight (wish I hadn't tried) I had to step down to 2 cans, then 1 now I'm almost to the point where I don't need one until supper time, then the headaches start and I get really irritable. I'm hoping to be caffeine free by X-mas.

FYI when I started researching my habits for my diet (2 weeks ago I started looking) like 50% of my daily calories came from liquids (juice for breakfast, 3 or 4 cokes and beer with dinner) like 1500 calories. I'm kind of embarrassed. I hope this diet shit works.

I have read articles that say Aspartame can cause symptoms that can be confused with MS. I don't like the idea of drinking something created in a lab, I'll stick to my all natural sugar cane. I love sugar!

If you are a rat and force fed an insane ammount of it you might get those symptoms. Diet pop in moderation is nothing to fear.

Seriously, if you added it all together, I probably drink a 6 pack (sometimes more) of Diet Dew per day. I also drink about 8-9 liquid cups of coffee per morning.

YES, I am a caffeine addict.

My dad is a 12 year member of AA. I've gone to a couple meetings with him, as his son not as an alcoholic myself, and the amount of caffeine drank and cigarettes smoked is astounding. Everyone just replacing one addiction with another. I guess coffee and cigarettes won't wreck a life like alcohol but still I see that logic as fundamentally flawed. "Don't fix your addictive personality, just replace a really bad addiction with something not so bad"

I drink one Diet Sunkist per day when we have it. It averages out to be 3 or 4 a week usually. If I am eating pizza I have to have a regular soda. I prefer Triple C (Coca Cola Classic). Also, if I clopen (work til 11 one night and at 7 the next morning) I drink a regular Sunkist from the vending machine to help wake me up.

I have can soda (diet or regular) of MAYBE a few times a month. I know it's boring, but I'm a water drinker. And no, not a snobby evian drinker, but a consumer of good ole NYC tap water.

A close second would be tea (hot with honey), or iced, unsweetened.

I only drink the original Mountain Dew, and lots of it. I've never tried any of the different flavors. Why mess with a great thing?
Mountain Dew goes with anything, breakfast, lunch or dinner.
I never understood why they came out with a diet version. Even worse, there is now a caffeine free version. Isn't all of the caffeine the point of Mountain Dew? The ultimate though is the Caffeine Free Diet Mountain Dew! At the point, it really isn't Mountain Dew anymore.

I agree with everything you say except the Diet Dew. Sugar is bad for the teeth :D
