Had an interesting discussion with my dad and uncle tonight about monetary policy which turned into a discussion of the gold standard which then followed on a discussion of the 1896 presidential election with William Jennings Bryan v William McKinley and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
So then, it's on TBS tonight and watching and explaining black and white TV, little people and that she is having a dream to my 6 year old daughter.
Interesting having two completely different discussions on the same movie.

Love this movie. My 11 year old really digs it too. He first watched it when he was like 5 and would sing "We're Off to See the Wizard". He was fascinated with the dance moves of Ray Bolger, the Scarecrow and would mimic them.

Few movies ever have given us more unique quotes..phrases.
There's no place like home.
You're not in Kansas anymore.
House fall on your sister?
Flying monkeys
Horse of a different color
follow the yellow brick road
Unbelievable movie so far ahead of it's time. I mean how many movies made this year will still be shown on TV in 2080?

A good amount of narcotics were utilized during the conception of this flick.

The only one I can think of is Casablance, the greatest movie ever made:
"Of all the gin joints in all the world, she walks into mine."
"Here's looking at you kid."
"Play it Sam."
"Round up the usual suspects."
"We'll always have Paris."
"Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful frienship."
"The problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans."

Cinderella story. Outta nowhere. A former greenskeeper, now, about to become the Masters champion. It looks like a mirac... It's in the hole! It's in the hole! It's in the hole!
The amazing stuff about this is, that you can play 36 holes on it in the afternoon, take it home and just get stoned to the bejeezus-belt that night on this stuff.
How about a Fresca?
I've sentenced boys younger than you to the gas chamber. Didn't want to do it. I felt I owed it to them.
Thank you very little.
Well, the world needs ditch diggers, too.
And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

Has anyone read the Wizard of Oz book? If so did they tell what happened to Dorothy's parents?

I read the book 20 years ago for college. From what I remember she is just orphaned and her parents demise have no significance to the story.

Yeah, I didn't think it had significance to the story. I was just watching the movie last night and wondered.

Wizard of Oz was my favorite movie as a kid. I would watch it almost every day. I loved The Wiz, Dreamer of Oz, and Return to Oz. I even had the animated version, and now I own Tin Man and I got Return to Oz on DVD for Christmas.
There is probably no more timeless and loved movie and I doubt there ever will be. The Wizard of Oz is the great American epic, and it will continue to be handed down from generation to generation. It's probably the most watched movie of all time, and perhaps the most reinterpreted story of all time.
As far as the quotes go, if you quote a movie like Anchor Man or Casablanca, you'll find a lot of people who know what you're talking about. If you quote Wizard of Oz everyone knows what you're talking about. Star Wars is probably the only other film that has a few quotes that everyone knows what they're from.

Great point. I think Godfather has a few (Enemies closer, swim with fishes, etc). But even those arent known by everyone.
Wizard of Oz has the most.
