Ladies and gentlemen, the 2009-2010 season is upon us! As we gear up for the opening weekend, I thought I’d write a little something in order to help myself and others to get acquainted with this season’s top teams and individuals for Central Ohio. So here goes…

Top Teams

DI
This year’s top team in Central Ohio for Division I is Marysville. Not only do they return 3 state placers (McCombs, Marsh & Weeks), they also return a handful of excellent wrestlers that can score points at the District tournament (Sparks, Green, Bass, & Philipot) that will contend for one of the top four spots at Darby. Add to that, the possibility of two or three quality incoming freshmen and it could be a recipe for a District title.

The Monarchs start the season at the competitive Eye of the Tiger Duals at Pickerington Central and then follow it up, a week later, with a dual meet tournament of their own. They round out the year going to Troy Christian on Dec. 19th and then head to the Brecksville Invitational.

DII

Divisional rearrangements aside, I think the team to beat in Central Ohio for DII will be (Lewis Center) Olentangy. Already a proven team (4 straight top 10 finishes in the DI District tournament at Darby), the Braves are poised to make their mark on the DII crowd. While they did lose some heavy-hitters in Sabo, DiSabato and Oglesbee, they still have two DI state placers. Not to mention their district qualifiers and, again, the possibility of incoming freshmen.

Olentangy starts the season by hosting a tournament and then, after a match at cross-town rival Liberty, they go to North Canton on Dec. 19th and then it’s off to Medina later this month. Not to mention, their assistant coaching staff is tops in Central Ohio!

DIII

Although the lines, to me, seem a bit blurred for DIII in Central Ohio sometimes, one thing is clear; West Jefferson is a very, very good team. On paper, they seem to be well ahead of the competition.

Last year they finished about 20 points behind a stout Pleasant squad in a two horse race. What’s crazy about this fact is that every single wrestler RETURNS! (Note: West Jeff entered 13 kids in the sectional tournament…13 qualified for the District tournament.)

West Jeff will find out very well where it fits in with the overall Central Ohio competition when they travel to Pickerington North on Dec. 19th for the Panther Duals. Teams like Hilliard Darby, Grove City, Teays Valley, Pickerington Central and host, Pickerington North will all be there for a dual meet tournament.

Nelsonville is def. Southeast OH, but are pretty tough, a team that will fight for a spot DIII in Central is Westfall. They came to Washington C.H. this weekend and had 5 transfers and a group of solid kids and looked pretty tough. The middle of there line-up 130 to 160 is solid. You could see them by the end of the year top 10 DIII Central. That's my 2 cents

See, to me, Court House, NY, Pleasant, Trace, Chilicothe, Westfall, and a few more are OUT THERE!!! But some of those teams get listed as Central Ohio and some not. Some have at one time been Central Ohio and others not. Is the state shifting beneath my very feet and I don't realize it?!?!?!?!?!?!

Another team that I forgot for DII is London. Are they Central Ohio. I say yes, but not sure.

I agree Marysville is way ahead of the others......Then Teays Valley..............After that the rest could be in any order. I will get to see Marysville this weekend at Eye of the Tiger. It will be interesting to see how they match up with Lakota West or St Xavier, I am sure they will be in the finals with one of those teams.

What does Grove City have?

Amanda will be a force in D3. Not sure if they are quite on the level of West Jeff, but they will be real good.

Got to watch London at a scrimmage last weekend. They have some studs.

I have to agree with huntergreen, Amanda should do pretty well in D3. Their schedule is really tough and those kids should be ready by the time sectionals roll around.

DIII - Hartley should have been Amanda Clearcreek. I wrote the wrong team. Sorry about that, and I fixed it.

Mat Shark... yeah, right! I have the inside skinny on that team and they'll have some kids, but, dude, as for a team... not there yet. So much to say here but I won't.

Utica drops to D3 (I think).....they have a few good kids who could impact sectionals

When do they start doing central district coaches polls? Is it after this weekend?

I thought it was in January!!!!!!!!

Wouldn't you put Davidson up there close to Marysville?
They are the defending District Champs.
They do have 3 returning SQs in Mickley and the DeLandes.
I believe they only lost one wrestler to the split.
I wouldn't put them ahead of Mville either but I would think that they would be right there.

I should have clarified... They way I look at team rankings is just that; TEAM strength. I remember when Westerville North went 0-5 in OCC competition. That's the same year they placed 3rd in the State(s) tournament.

Could Hilliard Davidson fall into a similar situation? It's possible, but I doubt it. But I do believe that they'll be in the top 5 at Darby.

Someone else posted either a top 10 or a top 5 somewhere and I agreed with the top 3... Marysville, Pick. North and Teays Valley. (I think these are with the smallest of margins, too. All three are good all the way through the line-up.) Again, this is on TEAM strength. I'd have to think way too long and WAY too hard to predict NOW what the state rundown for Central Ohio teams will be.

DI Marysville........Pickrington North..............an then everyone else. They are way ahead of the rest of the district right now. I think Marysville is a stronger tourney team, an that Pick North is a better duel team. DII HARTLEY!!! Don't know why their not getting more ink. They have 3 superstars( Fussco, Zang, and Jackson) an a host of upperclassmen talent thru the line-up. Just don't think people know how good they really are yet. Next it's Hilliard Bradley an maybe Olentangy or london. Bradley has depth, Olentangy has 2 stars, and London got a HUGE upgrade in talent thanks vie SWCS. I think Olentangy will be ok. But as a front runner as some Horsemen( aka Cruiser) my believe, just can't see it,as for the CW indians, way to many issuses to have a impact on this years team race. Canal was probably hurt the most by this years realignment an transfers. DIII WEST JEFFERSON (Contenders) NO ONE!! The roughriders may have their best TEAM ever this year. They are absolutly stacked top to bottom, an just for insurance they got a good #103 transfer from SWCS. I could honestly go on an on about this team, in fact they may be the TEAM in columbus regardless of division. I say team because they have no state finalists pre-say on the team, but a LARGE group of stateplacers, as mentioned 13 district qualifers plus a good transfer. Their match up with Pick North of Dec 19th will be one of the best duels in columbus in recent memory. ..................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................I would put Nelsonville-york second strictly on their star power.

hang loose... I would like to point out that as a team they are progressing nicely. I was able ot attend one of their summer sessions and therre were a host of Warriors there. It just so happens that two or three years ago, they were outmanned in dual meets. That's not to say they didn't have developing talent. I think that this year, we could see the fruits of some labor.

I was referring to a dual format, and I think (just my opinion and I have been wrong before) that Teays Valley would win a dual vs HD. TV returns 7 DQs and I believe two more that placed at Sectionals. I think Davidson is a very good team and you are right, They are not far behind Marysville and TV.

I dont see how pickerington north would not be able to beat marysville or even teays valley with the line-up pick north has they should be number 1 !

140- Al Marsico (Didn't make weight but beat Vanderhoff by 8 points who got 5th at states)

215- Lamancusa (Just beat the number 4 kid in the state from Oregon Clay)

Eeeeasy, taketop91. Marysville, Pick. North and Teays Valley - in a dual meet format - are seperated by the smallest of margins. All three are tremendously loaded.

Not that this has bearing on the rankings, but I will be keeping a close eye on the 103s for the Vikings and the Panthers. Smoot and Marsico are amazing wrestlers. Period. But 103 would be better in terms of team strength for a dual against Marysville.
