The pictures are cool, but the article makes it seem like this is an unknown event and no one has seen this in 40 years.

Um...because the Falls are over 12000 years old. You would think at some point I(we) would have heard about this.

I was in high school at that time, and I vaguely remember talking about it in science class. I also remember reading that the falls actually dried up back in the 1800's because the river iced up.

Why would I have any idea what you/they would have heard of? I've heard about it and I'm certain others have. So, there's a statistical probably that you would or wouldn't fall into that group. On another note, I'm quite disappointed in the 'Falls if this is all it really is...
I've never been, but I certainly thought it would look more majestic than that. Surely there's gotta be other places in this world that look similar. Again... never been in person so I'm sure one can't truly capture its magnitude from that picture.

That is a picture of the American Falls, the Horshoe (or Canadian) Falls are a little more impressive.

That's just the American Falls. Horseshoe Falls is more impressive.
I have been there a few times and it's pretty sweet. I wouldn't go for more than a long weekend...but it's a good time.

I've been a couple times too, a long weekend covers all you need to see.
I went late fall once, temperature were very cool, below freezing. Near the falls mist was freezing to the walkways and road surfaces. Much of my memory of that trip was seeing tour buses unload near the falls. One by one, a bus load of Asians with cameras in tow would step off the bus and fall on their ass. I watched the entire unloading process and literally 85% of the passengers hit the tarmac. It was hilarious.

Went a couple summers ago and loved it! Not something I would want to go every year, but it really is breathtaking, and once you are done looking at the falls there is actually a lot of stuff to do in the area. Lots of bars, restaurants and attractions nearby to keep you occupied for a weekend trip.

Just an FYI, the Maid of the Mist from the American side takes the exact same tour but the wait times are a lot shorter

But you don't have the same view of the Canadian falls and you don't have all the other attractions.

It's beautiful. That is where we took our 8th grade class trip, many, many years ago.

Our class went to Toronto in 5th grade to see Phantom of the Opera and on the way back we stopped. It was cold and gray but still an amazing thing to see. I also went with my Dad for a long weekend when I was in high school. It was warm and my brother and I had a lot of fun just walking around and seeing the sights.
