He will retire from PSU about a week after his funeral.
I think keeping him around is good for college football, but not necessarily good for Penn State.

Hard for the guy to let it go. 45 years is a long time to be doing something you love and walk away. I agree it's not been good for PSU to still have him running the show but it's not exactly been a total disaster either. They've competed well enough to be top ten several times in the last few years, not championship caliber but not turrible.
His biggest detriment has to be his ability to land recruits at this stage, I don't think I'd want to be around when the old ticker just stops and down goes Frazier.

JoePa's commitment to the program is an example for other coaches to follow. He didn't leave for more money, or a better opportunity. He has stuck it out in Happy Valley through good times and bad.
Most people I know prefer college sports because it is more old school, playing for the love of the game and for the pride of your school ( with a few exceptions). Who exemplifies this concept more than JoePa?

Couldn't it have been technical difficulties? I have a hard time thinking they found out all of the sudden that he was def when he got on the radio.

I'd agree his example was one to follow -- had he bowed out gracefully some years ago, instead of hanging on (apparently) to get the record for most wins and beat out Bowden.
If he TRULY had the best interests of Penn State at heart, he wouldn't have allowed himself to devolve into little more than a figurehead.

I don't think his hanging around has hurt Penn State at all. They have 3 top 10 finishes, 3 11 win seasons, and a 4-1 bowl record in the last 5 seasons. They had a top 10-15 recruiting class for this season too.

I've read a few comments on people speculating that he's afraid of retiring for fear of going out like Bear Bryant. If so you've gotta admit that the fear of death trumps retirement in most people's minds. What a bad situation for PSU to be in

I thought about that when I started the thread. Football may be the only thing keeping Joe Pa going right now.

Some people earn the right to leave their jobs (whatever they may be) whenever they feel the time is right for them. Joe Paterno is one of those rare people to earn this right. I still think FSU should be embarrassed how they ended Bobby Bowdens career.

Common Man and the Torg played the interview. It wasn't technical difficulties. JoePa had a guy beside of him who jumped on the phone for a few seconds and he said that he could hear just fine and that the place where they were was actually pretty quiet.
JoePa is just really old. Reminds of the Ohio State game post-game presser. They kept asking him why he went for it on 4th down at the 20ish yd line and he kept saying it was a "long FG" and they kept telling him "coach, yes, the first time it would have been a long FG, but the 2nd time you were well within range" and JoePa basically said he didn't remember

Do any of us on this board remember Penn State with a head coach other than JoePa?
How many good kids go there just because of Joe Pa? How many parents want their kids to go there because of Joe Pa?
In all honesty, what does Joe Pa do beside run out with the team and "talk" with players?

i think joe pa has one of the win percentages in the country and has been there 45 years let the man stay not to mention he has a great coaching staff working for him and he donates bacially his whole salary back to the university

Yes but Bear was in his sixties at the time. Joe is in his mid 80's. Regardless of whether he is the head coach at PSU or not, he could die anytime.

I don't see how he can be bad for the program. He doesn't even do anything on the sidelines, or even wears a headset. The only plus Penn State would have if he weren't there is the fact that they could pay some other coach less money to walk around on the sidelines and do nothing.

Apparently he's telling incoming recruits that he plans on being the coach their entire time at PSU.
I know he's just a figure head now, but it really is embarrassing. I know he's a legend, but how can the Penn State president continue to let him coach.
I heard this interview on the Common Man and the Torg yesterday and I was laughing hysterically. But it really is sad.
