Have read two recent articles about this, including one today on yahoo's feed about apartment staff tipping which was ridiculous, $500 per tenant was considered "cheap."

Who do you tip?

Mailman?
Hairdresser?
Garbage collectors?
Anyone else?

If so, how much?

Honestly, we don't tip anyone today - we don't have doormen, don't have a regular mailman and I don't have a regular hair person - and my wife's gets paid plenty during the course of the year. Just curious what others do.

No to the categories listed above. We don't have a doorman, we don't have a regular mailman, and we don't have regular hair people.

I do pay an out-of-pocket "bonus" to my secretary at Christmas (on the order of $100-200), though that's more along the lines of protection money than a tip.

Beyond that, though, I can't think of anyone we tip at Christmas.

The people I tip:

Waitress/Waiter - at least 20%
Barber - Usually give them $15 for a $12 cut(I only get a 5min clipper cut)
Drive-Thru worker(not fast food drive thrus)- Usually just a dollar or two

I've never even heard of tipping a mailman or garbage man.

Tip the mailman a Tim Hortons gift certificate, and the garbage man a case of beer. They've saved me some dough not going to the dump or having someone haul some bigger appliances away or yard waste.

Nope, don't tip anyone unless we go out to eat. Cut my own hair, haven't spoke to the mail woman ever and the garbage people get paid more than most people in this town, stupid government.
